Definitions
- the present invention relates to a capsule for preparing a liquid food according to the preamble of claim 1.
- capsules are often used for preparing different hot beverages, especially coffee or tea, at home.
- Such capsules which are designed as single-use products, usually include a capsule body that forms a receiving space for the beverage ingredients, and a lid that covers the capsule body.
- the ingredients are mostly roasted and ground coffee powder, but sometimes also dried tea leaves.
- soluble products in general or concentrates can also be used.
- pressurized water is passed through the capsule, resulting in the extraction or dissolution of the material contained in the chamber.
- EP 1 440 913 A1 a capsule which is suitable for receiving various beverage ingredients.
- Said capsule consists of essentially air and water impermeable materials.
- the capsule includes a capsule body that forms a receiving space for the beverage ingredients.
- an outlet nozzle is held in the receiving space by a support means acting on the base of the capsule.
- both the receiving space and the outlet nozzle are closed with a lid that covers the capsule body.
- the lid is penetrated in two places at the same time; On the one hand to introduce pressurized water into the chamber, on the other hand to open the outlet nozzle.
- the problem with said capsule is that the support means for holding the outlet nozzle runs through the receiving space and thus reduces its usable volume. This is particularly disadvantageous when larger portions of beverage ingredients are required, for example for the simultaneous production of several cups of coffee or a particularly strong coffee beverage that requires larger amounts of coffee powder.
- the capsule should be able to be produced inexpensively and in large numbers.
- the capsule for the preparation of a liquid foodstuff comprises a preferably rotationally symmetrical capsule body with a side wall and with a base that is in particular designed in one piece with it.
- the capsule comprises a lid covering the capsule body to form a receiving space for at least one starting substance for preparing the liquid foodstuff.
- an outlet nozzle with an inlet opening and an outlet opening is held in the capsule body. The outlet nozzle is directed with its outlet opening towards the inside of the lid.
- the outlet nozzle can be held in the capsule body by at least one support means.
- the at least one support means grips the capsule body on the side wall, in particular in an edge region, preferably on an inner shoulder or on an inner edge.
- the outlet nozzle can also be attached to the inside of the lid and thus held in the capsule body.
- the receiving space extends at least between the inlet opening of the outlet nozzle and the bottom of the capsule body.
- This configuration of the capsule can prevent the at least one support means from running through the receiving space for the starting substance. In this way, the proportion of the total volume of the capsule body that can be used to accommodate the starting substance can be increased.
- the at least one support means can be designed as a perforated plate covering the receiving space. This enables a liquid introduced through the lid of the capsule to flow through the holes in the perforated plate into the receiving space containing the starting substance. The resulting flow resistance is comparatively low. The outlet nozzle is reliably held in the capsule body by the perforated plate.
- the at least one support means can also be designed as a valve plate covering the receiving space. An edge of the valve plate can form mutually touching valve surfaces with the capsule body in an unpressurized state.
- the at least one support means can also be provided as a multiplicity of, in particular, radially extending striving to be trained. This design means that the capsule body does not need to be subdivided into a number of compartments, with the result that the receiving space for the at least one starting substance extends essentially through the entire capsule body. The capsule body can thus be filled with the starting substance up to the lid. The available volume of the capsule body is correspondingly well utilized.
- the at least one support means does not increase the flow resistance of a liquid conducted through the capsule. The outlet nozzle is nevertheless reliably held in the capsule body.
- the outlet nozzle and the at least one support means can be designed in one piece. This eliminates the problem of creating a reliable connection between the support means and the outlet nozzle. Furthermore, such a capsule can be produced efficiently and inexpensively.
- the outlet nozzle and/or the support means can be firmly connected, in particular in a fluid-tight manner, to the lid covering the capsule body. In this way, in particular, unintentional leakage of the capsule contents during food preparation can be avoided.
- the outlet nozzle is closed by the lid covering the capsule body. This makes it possible to store the at least one starting substance for preparing the liquid food in a hermetically sealed manner in the receiving space of the capsule body.
- a filter element is arranged on the outlet connection piece, in particular on its inlet opening. Such is usually necessary for the preparation of liquid foods by extraction of a starting substance. This is especially true for coffee or tea.
- An arrangement with the filter element directly at the inlet opening of the outlet connection is advantageous in that no further fluid-carrying elements are necessary for guiding the filtrate to the outlet connection. As a result, a larger proportion of the total volume of the capsule body can be used as accommodation space for the at least one starting substance.
- the filter element covers the inlet opening of the outlet nozzle and has an area of 200 to 1000 mm 2 , preferably 400 to 800 mm 2 , preferably 500 to 700 mm 2 . It has been shown that such a surface is particularly advantageous in the case of capsules which are intended for producing a single portion of a coffee beverage. This can be justified by the fact that such a dimensioning of the filter element represents a good balance between the space it requires within the capsule body and the flow resistance it causes.
- the filter element can be designed as a fleece, perforated foil or filter plate. These are filter types that have proven their worth in beverage production, especially in the production of coffee beverages. In addition, these can be produced inexpensively and can therefore be used in disposable capsules.
- the filter element can be supported by a support structure. The use of a support structure effectively prevents the filter element from bursting due to the occurrence of a pressure gradient during filtration.
- an inlet in particular an inlet channel
- an inlet nozzle can be arranged inside the capsule body and directed in the direction of the lid covering the capsule body.
- the inlet optionally additionally, as an inlet nozzle.
- the presence of an enema makes it possible to better control the introduction of a liquid into the receiving space of the capsule body.
- the liquid can be better distributed over the entire contents of the capsule.
- the presence of an inlet nozzle makes it easier to establish a tight fluid connection between a food preparation device and the capsule.
- the inlet can be closed with the lid covering the capsule body.
- both the inlet and the outlet nozzle are arranged on the same side of the capsule. This has the advantage that in order to conduct a liquid through the capsule, only the cover covering the opening of the capsule body may have to be broken through. An often difficult penetration of the capsule body, which may also require the provision of predetermined breaking points, is no longer necessary.
- the end faces of the capsule body and the outlet nozzle, and possibly also the inlet, can in particular be arranged essentially in one plane. This allows the lid to be attached to the capsule body by conventional methods used for sealing food packages.
- the outlet nozzle can be arranged centrally and the inlet can be arranged in an edge area of the capsule body. This is particularly advantageous since in practice extraction or dissolution of the capsule contents from the outside inwards has proven to be advantageous.
- the capsule body can be manufactured by an injection molding or a deep-drawing process and, in particular, can be designed to be oxygen-tight and/or aroma-tight. If the capsule is designed to be oxygen-tight, penetration of oxygen into the capsule during storage of a starting substance contained therein is essentially avoided. As a result, aging of the starting substance, for example coffee powder, can be avoided by oxidation. An oxygen-tight capsule is usually also aroma-tight. Accordingly, flavoring substances contained in the starting substance are essentially prevented from escaping during storage of the same within the capsule. Oxygen and aroma tightness are required in order to achieve a shelf life of at least twelve months, preferably eighteen months, particularly in the case of coffee.
- an oxygen and/or aroma-tight capsule means a capsule in which coffee powder can be stored at room temperature in atmospheric air for a period of at least twelve months, preferably at least eighteen months, without the coffee powder changing, which would affect the quality of a coffee beverage made from it impaired.
- the film used has an OTR (oxygen transmission rate) of less than 5, preferably less than 2.
- OTR oxygen transmission rate
- the OTR indicates the amount of oxygen per unit area and Unit of time diffused through a foil, in the unit: cm 3 /m 2 /day/0.21 bar.
- the capsule body and optionally also the outlet nozzle and/or the holding means can be made of a single-layer or multi-layer plastic, preferably containing polypropylene. This is a material that has proven itself for the production of food packaging. In addition, polypropylene can be easily processed by injection molding.
- the present invention also relates to a food preparation system comprising a capsule as described above and a food preparation device.
- a capsule body 2 for a capsule 1 comprises a side wall 3 which is formed in one piece with a base 4 .
- the capsule body 2 forms a receiving space 6 for at least one starting substance for preparing a beverage.
- the capsule body 2 has an inner shoulder 12 in an edge region 11, on which a support means 10 can act.
- the capsule body 2 has an end face 24 to which a cover 5 covering the capsule body can be glued, sealed or welded.
- the outlet connection 7 is in one piece with the support means 10, here a perforated plate 14.
- the perforated plate 14 has a large number of holes 25 .
- the outlet nozzle 7 is surrounded by two peripheral collars 26 and 27 .
- the outlet nozzle 7 and the two peripheral collars 26 and 27 have the end faces 24', 24'' and 24'''.

- the lid 5 is welded to the end face 24 of the capsule body 2 on the one hand, but also to the end faces 24" and 24"" of the peripheral collars 26 and 27 on the other hand Cover 5 closed.
- a liquid is fed into the capsule 1 through the inlet channel 23 , it can reach the holes 25 between the cover 5 and the perforated plate 14 and flow through them into the receiving space 6 .
- the large number of holes 25 provided ensures that the liquid introduced into the capsule 1 is evenly distributed over the entire receiving space 6 .
- the introduced liquid runs through the two filter elements 19 and 19 ′ one after the other in order to reach the outlet connection piece 7 via the inlet opening 8 .
- the second filter element 19' is supported by the support structures 20, which is evident from the enlargement of the partial area A in figure 7 is evident.
- the inlet opening 8 is designed as a crema slot 28 .
- the liquid In order to flow into the outlet nozzle 7, the liquid must pass through the crema slot 28, which causes it to foam.
- the cover 5 is penetrated between the outlet nozzle 7 and the peripheral collar 26 by an annular penetration element present on a beverage production device. The finished drink can be derived from the capsule 1 as a result.
- the capsule body 2 of an alternative exemplary embodiment of a capsule 1 according to the invention has no inner shoulder 12 but an inner edge 13 . Together with the side wall 3 of the capsule body 2, this forms an inlet channel 23.
