Abstract
The biocides, which are stable and have low phytotoxicity, are prepared by hydrogenating synthetic oils which are derived from low mol. wt. olefins. The monomeric olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylenes, and partic. mixtures of these obtained in petroleum cracking processes. The polyolefin derived from these monomers is pref. a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, the prepn. of which is completed by distillation under vacuum to adjust the viscosity or an oligomer of propylene. The hydrogenation of the polyolefin synthetic oil takes place at 150-400 (pref. 200-300) degrees C, and 20-160 (pref. 40-80) bars, the vol. of oil used per hr/vol. of catalyst being 0.2-0.5 (pref. 0.5-1, and the vol. of H2 (at STP) used per hr/vol. of oil used per hr. being 50-1000 (pref. 100-300). The viscosity of the biocides is 5-70 centistokes at 37-8 degrees C. The biocides, which have acaricidal and insecticidal activity, are pref. used in the form of an emulsion.
