Description
SPECIFICATION
Fuel oil filter and water separator unit
This invention relates to fuel oil filters in combination with water separators for use in the fuel oil supply system of an internal combustion engine, and more particularly to a fuel oil filter and a water separator working in combination with one another.
A known combination of fuel oil filter and water separator is one in which a fuel oil filter unit is sandwiched between an engine mount for the filter unit and a water separator unit in an arrangement in which fuel oil is supplied to the filter unit for filtration to remove solid contaminants therein, and the filtered oil passes into the water separator unit situated below the filter unit, where separation of any water entrained in the fuel oil occurs by gravity settlement. A drain means is provided at the base of the water separator to remove any water thus separated out from the fuel oil.Such a combined system of units necessarily employs a plurality of sealing gaskets to seal the components of the system together, and correct alignment of these sealing gaskets to obtain effective sealing of the two units can be difficult to obtain during routine servicing of the engine to which the system is fitted.
The present invention was devised with a view to removing the need to build up such a combined fuel oil filter and water separator system from separate units during servicing of the engine on which the system is mounted.
A replaceable combined fuel oil filter and water separator unit according to the present invention, for use as a fuel oil filter on an internal combustion engine, comprises a hollow cup-shaped casing with openable drainage means in the base thereof and having formed in the wall thereof intermediate the ends thereof a radially inwardly directed annular bead dividing said casing into a lower section containing the base of the container, and an upper section, said bead providing a lower annular locating and sealing rim for an annular base plate of a fuel oil filter element positioned in the upper section of the casing with said base plate in sealing engagement with said bead; a circular end plate, an outer peripheral portion of which is secured to a rim of the casing, said end plate having a central internally threaded hollow neck which is adapted to be screwed on to a complementary threaded portion of a mount for the filter, and a plurality of fuel oil inlet apertures situated in a common annular zone of the end plate overlying an upper end of said filter element; said filter element being biased towards said annular bead by means of an annular elastomeric seal member sandwiched between the upper end of said filter element and said end plate, and comprising a hollow tubular filter element centred in said casing by means of a depending annular lip on said annular elastomeric seal member extending within an upper portion of a central bore of the filter element, and by means of a central flange portion of the base plate of the filter element, which flange portion fits into a lower
portion of said central bore of the filter element,
the hollow tubular filter element being formed
from a strip of filter paper joined at its ends and
folded about transverse fold lines into a series of
accordion pleats, the ends of said pleats being
sealed by a heat-curable synthetic fuel oil
resistant adhesive, and the outer pleat folds of the
filter element being in contact with the inner
surface of the wall of said casing.
Preferably the circular end plate is secured to
the rim of the casing by means of an annular sheet
metal disc, an outer peripheral portion of which is
secured to the rim of the casing by a spun-over
rolled seam joint, and an inner peripheral portion
of which is formed as an annular channel-shaped
member which retains an annular seal adapted to
be placed in sealing engagement with a
complementary sealing surface on said mount.
In a preferred embodiment of the present
invention, said annular elastomeric seal member is
formed with an annular radially inwardly directed
lip portion which, when the filter unit is screwed
on to said complementary threaded portion of said
filter mount, sealingly engages a depending
portion of said mount.
The invention and how it may be performed are
hereinafter particularly described with reference to
the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of one embodiment
of a replaceable combined fuel oil filter and water
separator unit according to the present invention,
shown partly in cross section; and
Figure 2 shows an enlarged cross-sectional
scrap view of a modification to the unit shown in
Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a replaceable combined fuel oil
filter and water separator unit 10 according to the
present invention, comprising a hollow cup
shaped casing 12 with a threaded drain plug 14
screwed into place in an annular internally
threaded thickened portion 16 in the base 18 of
the cup-shaped casing 12. The circular wall 20 of
the cup-shaped casing 12 has formed
intermediate the ends thereof a radially inwardly
directed annular bead 22 which divides the cup
shaped casing 12 into a lower section 24 and an
upper section 26. The lower section 24 contains
the drain plug 14 and serves as the water
separator section of the unit. The annular bead 22
provides a lower annular locating and sealing rim
for an annular base plate 28 of a fuel oil filter
element 30 positioned in the upper section 26 of
the cup-shaped casing 12.Base plate 28 has a
central upstanding flange portion 32 and has an
outer peripheral stepped flange portion 34 which
locates on the annular bead 22. An annular seal
member 36 encircles the outer peripheral stepped
flange portion 34 of the base plate 28 and makes
sealing contact with the inner surface of the
circular wall 20 of the cup-shaped casing 12.
Fuel oil filter element 30 is a hollow tubular
filter element constructed from a strip of filter
paper joined at its end and folded about transverse
fold lines into a series of accordion pleats, the ends of said pleats being sealed by a heat-curable synthetic fuel oil-resistant adhesive. The outer pleat folds of the filter element 30 make contact with the inner surface of the circular wall 20 of the cup-shaped casing 12, and the base of the filter element 30 is located in position upon the base plate 28 by reason of the inner flange portion 32 extending up into a central bore 38 extending through the filter element. The positive retention of the filter element 30 within the cup-shaped casing 12 in this way facilitates the in-situ curing of the sealing adhesive on the filter element.
The cup-shaped casing 12 is closed by means of a circular end plate 40, an outer peripheral portion 42 of which is fixed to an annular sheet metal disc 44, preferably by projection welding, an outer peripheral portion 46 of which is secured to the rim of the casing 12 by a spun-over rolled seamed joint 48. The inner peripheral portion 50 of the disc 44 is shaped in the form of a channelshaped annular rim which retains an elastomeric seal member 52 which, when the filter unit 10 is screwed on to a complementary threaded portion (not shown) of a filter mount (not shown), sealingly engages a complementary sealing portion (not shown) of said mount.
The end plate 40 has a central internally threaded hollow neck 54 which is adapted to be screwed on to said complementary threaded portion of said filter mount. There is a plurality of fuel oil inlet apertures 56 situated in a common annular zone of the end plate 40 overlying an upper end 58 of said filter element 30.
Sandwiched between the upper end 58 of the filter element 30 and the end plate 40 is an annular elastomeric seal member 60 having an annular radially inwardly directed lip portion 62 which, when the filter unit 10 is screwed on to said complementary threaded portion of said filter mount, sealingly engages a depending portion (not shown) of said filter mount. The annular elastomeric seal member 60 is also provided with a stepped annular depending lip portion 64 which extends into an upper portion of the central bore 38 of the filter element 30 both to centre the upper end 58 of the filter element 30 within the upper section 26 of the cup-shaped casing 12 and to resiliently bias the filter element 30 into contact with the base plate 28, which, in turn, biases the outer stepped portion 34 of the base plate 28 into contact with the annular bead 22.
The external surface of the circular wall 30 within the lower section 24 of the cup-shaped container 12 is configured with a series of flat surfaces 66 to assist in screwing and unscrewing the unit on the filter mount.
The operation of the unit 10, when screwed into place upon the complementary filter mount of an internal combustion engine, will now be described. Fuel oil is supplied to the unit 10 through the fuel oil inlet apertures 56 in the end plate 40, and the fuel oil flows on to the upper, sealed ends of the pleats of the filter element 30 at the upper end 58 thereof, and percolates between the pleats of the filter element 30. The fuel oil then passes through the pleats of the filter element 30 to reach the central bore 38 of the filter element, leaving on the outer surfaces of the pleats of the element any solid contaminants in the fuel oil. The filtered fuel oil reaching the central bore 38 of the filter element 30 passes into the lower section 24 of the cup-shaped casing 12 until this section is full with fuel oil.The level of fuel oil then rises in the central bore 38 until it leaves the filter unit through the hollow complementary threaded portion (not shown) of the filter mount on to which the hollow threaded neck 54 of the end plate 40 is screwed. During the passage of the fuel oil through the filter element into the bore 38, any droplets of water entrained in the fuel oil are coalesced by the filter paper into separate drops of water which subsequently run off the clean side of the filter element and settle out towards the base 18 of the casing 12 by gravity, due to the difference in densities between the fuel oil and the entrained water.
Turning now to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, this shows a modification to the combined fuel oil filter and water separator unit shown in Figure 1, in which the base plate 28' of the filter element 30' has a channel-shaped annular groove 66 formed in the base plate adjacent said inner flange portion 32', and the outer stepped flanged portion 34' is made shallower in cross-section than as shown in
Figure 1. In this modified form of the unit, the seal member 36 is dispensed with, and is replaced by a layer 68 of a synthetic fuel oil-resistant adhesive retained on the outer stepped flange portion 34' of the base plate 28' and in adhesive sealing contact with the base plate 28' and the interior surface of the container wall 20' adjacent said annular bead 22'.Similarly, the annular groove 66 is filled with a similar adhesive which serves to seal and anchor the filter element 30' in place upon the base plate 28'. The remaining features of this modified unit are exactly the same as those shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings.
The combined fuel oil filter and water separator unit according to the present invention provides a means of quickly and effectively installing or replacing a fuel oil filter unit on an internal combustion engine that will separate out from the fuel oil both solid contaminants and any entrained water therein. Since the water separator section of the unit is integral with the fuel oil filter section of the unit, previous problems on sealing the joints
between the separate units are avoided.
Moreover, since all the necessary sealing elements
of the replaceable unit are already installed in the
unit during manufacture thereof, the installation or
replacement of the unit on an internal combustion
engine is reduced solely to a matter of either
screwing the unit on, or unscrewing the unit from,
the complementary filter mount on the internal
combustion engine concerned.
