Description
SPECIFICATION
A fishing rod rest
This invention relates to a fishing rod rest. The fishing rod rest is especially useful for use in sea angling.
Sea angling is a popular sport but holding a fishing rod over the side of a fishing boat for long periods of time can be both tiring and inconvenient. If an angler wishes to leave his fishing rod, for example to eat food, it is usual for the angler to wedge his fishing rod in position, for example with whatever pieces of material may be available. These pieces of material may not be totally suitable for the purpose.
The present invention provides a fishing rod rest comprising a body, a rod receiving slot in the body which extends at an angle to the vertical and which is for receiving a part of the fishing rod, hook means for hooking over another part of the rod, and clamp means for clamping the fishing rod rest to a side of a fishing boat.
The fishing rod rest of the present invention is especially useful for sea angling although it can also be used for angling on lakes and rivers if desired. The fishing rod rest can be used to temporarily support a fishing rod when an angler wishes to cease holding the rod for a desired purpose. The fishing rod rest can also be used to support a fishing rod for the entire time until a fish is caught and, in this connection, it has been found that the fishing rod rest will sway with the fishing boat and will cause minimal movement to the fishing line. In contrast, often anglers holding fishing rods tend to move against the normal sway of a fishing boat and this often tends to cause undesired jerky movements in the fishing line.
Usually, the hook means will extend at an angle to the vertical. The centre of the slot and the centre of the hook means may be aligned.
Preferably, the body comprises a first body part which extends substantially at right angles to a second body part, the rod receiving slot being in the first body part and the hook means and the clamp means being on the second body part.
Usually, the first body part will be releasably secured to the second body part, whereby the first body part can be reversed to reverse the angle of the rod receiving slot to cater for incoming and outgoing tides.
The first body part is preferably releasably secured to the second part by screw means.
Advantageously, the first body part is adjustable in height with respect to the second body part. This may be achieved by providing the first body part with a height adjusting slot and screw means for locking the first body part at a desired height with respect to the second body part.
Preferably, the hook means is releasably secured to the second body part, whereby the hook means can be secured in position on the second body part to cater for incoming and outgoing tides.
Advantageously, the hook means is releasably secured in position by screw means. The hook means may locate in a pair of holes in the second body part.
The clamp means is preferably a screw clamp.
The screw clamp may be such that a screw can be rotated to move a movable jaw in and out as desired.
Advantageously, the fishing rod rest includes locking means for locking the clamp means in a desired position. This locking means may be screw locking means.
In order to avoid chaffing between the fishing rod rest and a fishing rod, the slot and the hook means are advantageously padded, for example with rubber or a foam material.
The fishing rod rest may be easily fabricated from sheet metal parts. The fishing rod rest should desirably be made from material that will not unduly rust in normal conditions of use.
Accordingly, all metal plates are advantageously zinc plated. The sheet metal is advantageously stove enamelled.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fishing rod rest for sea angling;
Figure 2 is a side view of the fishing rod rest shown in Figure 1, the fishing rod rest shown in
Figure 1 being turned through 1800:
Figure 3 is a plan view of the fishing rod rest shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an end view of the fishing rod rest shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a fishing rod rest 2 comprising a body constituted by a first body part 4 and a second body part 6. The first body part 4 is provided with a rod receiving slot 8 which extends at an angle to the vertical as shown. The slot 8 is for receiving a part of a fishing rod (not shown).
The fishing rod rest 2 also includes hook means in the form of a hook 10 for receiving another part of the fishing rod, which will usually be an end part of the handle of the fishing rod. In order to avoid the fishing rod chaffing against the slot 8 and the hook 10, the slot 8 is provided with a rubber covering 12 and the hook 10 is provided with a rubber covering 1 4.
in the position shown in Figure 1, a fishing rod can be located in the slot 8 and the hook 10 and if the tide is flowing in the correct direction, the fishing rod will be forced into the slot 8 and it will not come out of the slot 8. For a tide running in the opposite direction, a screw 1 6 is undone. The part 4 can then be turned through 1800 so that the slot 8 will be extending in the opposite direction and then the screw 1 6 can be done up.
The threaded shank 18 of the screw 1 6 extends through a height adjusting slot 20 in the part 4 and into an anchor rivet bush 21 in the part 6.
When the screw 1 6 is tight, the part 4 is locked in position.
If it is desired to adjust the height of the part 4 with respect to the part 6, the screw 1 6 can be released and the part 4 moved up and down as desired. The part 4 will slide in flanges 22 formed on the body part 6. The screw 1 6 will be retightened when the part 4 is at a desired height with respect to the part 6 and therefore with respect to the side of a boat.
When the part 4 is turned through 180 , it will usually be desirable to move the hook 10 from a first position shown in Figure 1 in which it locates in a hole 24 to a second position in which it will locate in a hole 26. The end of the hook 10 is secured in position by a screw 28 which extends into a piece of tubing 29 which receives the end of the hook 10.
The fishing rod rest 2 is secured to the side of a boat by clamp means in the form of a screw clamp 28. The clamp 28 has a fixed jaw 30 which is constituted by part of the body part 6, and a movable jaw 32 which can be moved in and out
by means of a screw adjuster 34. When the jaw 32 is in a desired position tightly clamping the side of a fishing boat between the jaws 30, 32, the screw adjuster 34 can be locked in position by a
locking screw 36. In order to give the body 6 rigidity, ribs 40 are deformed from the sheet
material. A slot 42 is formed between the ribs 40 for allowing the part 6 to slide with respect to the
locking screw 36.
When the fishing rod is in position on the
fishing rod rest 2, the fishing line can be passed through one or other of fishing line-receiving apertures 44 which are formed as shown in the top edge of the part 4.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, a different type of
hook means that the hook 10 may be employed.
Furthermore, the shape of the body parts 4, 6 may
be varied. The jaws 30, 32 may be covered with
rubber of a foam material, and the fishing rod rest 2 can also be used for pier fishing.
