Abstract
210,955. Becker, T. Jan. 9, 1923. Castings.-In the manufacture of rolled metal tubes a metal bloom or ingot 0 is passed to the piercing mill direct from a casting mould or from a furnace in which the bloom is kept hot so that the core is still hot when the bloom is pierced by means of a mandrel carried by a pivoted holder A. To cool the mandrel, cooling water flows into the central chamber K and passes out through the surrounding annular passage, the cock B<1> in the supply pipe being automatically closed by a spring E when the mandrel-rod holder is swung aside to allow the pierced bloom to be removed.
