Abstract

This invention relates to a scaffolding clamp of the kind which comprises a body portion having a seating for receiving the scaffolding tube, a clamping portion which is pivotally connected to the body portion and screw threaded fastening means for releasably securing the clamping portion to the body portion in order to clamp the scaffolding tube between said body portion and clamping portion. The screw threaded fastening means comprises a bolt 16 which is mounted on the clamping portion 13 (or on the body portion 11) so as to be rotatable but non- detachable relative thereto, together with a nut 24 which is non-detachably mounted on the body portion 11 (or on the clamping portion 13). Preferably said nut 24 is mounted so that it can swivel about an axis which is perpendicular to the axis of its screw threaded bore. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Scaffolding fitting This invention relates to a scaffolding fitting and has for its object the provision of such a fitting in an improved form.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a scaffolding fitting which comprises a body portion formed with a seating for receiving a scaffolding tube, a clamping portion which is pivotally connected to said body portion, and screw-threaded fastening means for releasably securing the clamping portion to the body portion in an operative position in which said scaffolding tube is clamped between the body portion and the clamping portion, said screw-threaded fastening means comprising a bolt which is non-detachably mounted on the clamping portion (or on the body portion) so as to be rotatable relative thereto and a nut which is non-detachably mounted on the body portion (or on the clamping portion), the bolt being engageable with the nut when it is desired to secure the clamping portion in its operative position.
The body portion may conveniently be formed with a second seating and an associated second clamping portion together with screw-threaded fastening means similar to the first mentioned clamping portion and screw-threaded fastening means. Preferably, the body portion and the or each clamping portion are formed as forgings although they may be formed as pressings or castings. Furthermore, the or each nut may be mounted on the body portion (or on the associated clamping portion) so that it can swivel about an axis which is perpendicular to the axis of its screw- threaded bore. The or each bolt may be formed, at its end opposite to its threaded end, with a squared or non-circular end so as to be adapted to receive a suitable tool whereby it may be rotated but conveniently it is formed with an aperture extending through the bolt in a direction transverse to its length so that it can receive the end of a tommy-bar or "podger" whereby it can be rotated.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of one example of a scaffolding fitting in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to the drawing there is shown therein a scaffolding fitting which is adapted for use in connecting together a pair of elongate scaffolding members in a mutually perpendicular relationship. To this end the fitting is provided with a body portion 10 which is conveniently formed as a forging (although it may be formed as a pressing or casting) and said body portion is formed with a pair of seatings of which one is indicated by reference numeral 11. Further, in the drawing a part of only one of said elongate scaffolding members 1 2 is shown which is depicted as being clamped in position, the seating 11 being adapted to receive the other elongate scaffolding member which will in use extend in a direction at right angles to the length of the member 12.
In association with each of said seatings such as seating 11 there is provided a clamping portion 13 or 14 which are each also conveniently formed as forgings although again they could be formed as pressings or castings. Each of said clamping portions 13 and 14 is conveniently formed at one end to a generally forked configuration which is pivotally connected to the body portion 10 by means of a pivot pin 1 5 which is rivetted over at its ends. At that end of each clamping portion 1 3 or 1 4 opposite to said forked end there is provided a bolt 1 6 or 17 which extends through an aperture formed in the associated clamping portion. Each of said bolts 1 6 and 1 7 is also provided with a captive washer 18 or 19 or a circlip or like means disposed adjacent one end of the threaded portion of the bolt and adjacent to one side of the associated clamping portion. On the opposite side of the associated clamping portion the head of each bolt 1 6 and 1 7 has an enlarged portion 20 or 21 so that each bolt is captive in the sense that it is constrained against axial movement relative to the associated clamping portion (by the aforesaid captive washer or circlip on the one hand and by the aforesaid enlarged portion on the other hand) whilst being free to rotate relative to said clamping portion. In other words each bolt will be non-detachably mounted on the associated clamping portion. Each bolt 1 6 and 1 7 is formed with a head in which there is preferably provided an aperture 22 or 23 which may be of non-circular configuration so as to be adapted to receive the end of a suitable tool such as a "podger" having a cross-section of similar configuration whereby the tool can be inserted into the aperture 22 or 23 when it is desired to rotate the associated bolt.
There is also provided, for co-acting with said bolts 16 and 17, a nut 24 or 25, each of said nuts being conveniently formed from a short length of tubular steel which may be formed on its exterior with a pair of oppositely disposed axially extending flats and each nut is preferably pivotally mounted on said body portion 10 by means of a further pivot pin 26 or 27, each nut being disposed between a pair of forked portions provided on the body portion and each pivot pin 26 or 27 being rivetted over at its ends. Each nut is therefore also non-detachably mounted on the body portion although it is to be understood that if desired the two bolts may be mounted on the body portion and the two associated nuts mounted respectively on the two clamping portions instead.
In use and when it is desired to assemble the elongate scaffolding members to the fitting, each of said bolts 1 6 and 1 7 would be rotated to disengage them from the associated nuts 24 and 25 and the two clamping portions 13 and 14 would then be moved into their relatively open positions to permit insertion of the scaffolding members and enable them to be located in the seatings (such as seating 11) provided in the body portion. The two clamping portions are then closed so that complementary seatings formed on the inside of each of said clamping portions will also engage the scaffolding members whilst the bolts 1 6 and 17 are respectively engaged with the nuts 24 and 25, the latter being capable of being swivelled to ensure correct alignment with the threaded ends of the bolts. The latter can then be tightened by use of a tool inserted into said aperture 22 and 23 in order that the two scaffolding members can be firmly clamped to the body portion.
The above described embodiment relates to a fitting in which the two elongate scaffolding members are clamped together in a fixed mutually perpendicular relationship but in an alternative arrangement the body portion may be arranged so that the two elongate scaffolding members are capable of swivelling relative to each other after they have been secured by the respective clamping portions. Furthermore, it is to be understood that the body portion and clamping portions can be formed to configurations other than those shown in the drawings in a fitting in accordance with the invention.
