Abstract

A tape cassette has anti-friction members for the tape edges provided by disc-shaped members (3). The members (3) are mounted for rotation on the reel hubs (4) on both sides of the tape, thereby inhibiting increase of take-up torque which could lead to stopping and breaking of the tape and adverse effects upon the speed of the tape or wow flutter. The members (3) can rotate with the wound tape body, and the surfaces of the members have bad Teflon (registered trade mark) particles applied under beat and pressure. The external diameter of the discs is slightly less than that of the fully wound tape body. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Tape cassette with anti-friction members The present invention relates to improvements in cartridge type tape cassettes.
In a conventional cassette, as shown in Fig.
2 of the accompanying drawings, thin sheets 2 of tetrafluorethylene film or the like are mounted on each cassette half 1 so that the latter does not itself directly contact a reel hub 4 and/or a wound tape body. However, when the sheet 2 is, as shown, of rectangular form and almost the same size as the conventional cassette half 1, the tape after a time becomes undesirably stretched at its edges. As a result the sound reproduction is very adversely affected and the frictional force between the edges of the tape and the sheets 2 increases during the rotation of the tape resulting in increasing take-up torque which can reach the stage where the tape cannot be rotated or has a very uneven rotation Moreover, after a long period of use, not only the tape, but also the surface of the sheets becomes roughened, resulting in an increasing frictional force.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tape cartridge type cassette which overcomes the above described drawbacks of the conventional ones.
According to the present invention, there is provided a cartridge type cassette characterised in that members providing engagement surfaces for the edges of the tape within the cassette are rotatably mounted on the reel hubs on both sides of the tape.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:~ Figure 1 shows an external view of a cassette tape, Figure 2 is an opened-out view of the conventional cassette casing previously mentioned.
Figure 3 is a view of a member used in a cassette according to the present invention, and Figure 4 is an opened-out view of a cassette in accordance with the present invention used in a cassette tape.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, cassette halves 1 of a conventional cassette are covered with sheets 2 of tetrafluoroethylene film. In contrast the cassette shown in Fig. 4 has annular discs 3 to whose surfaces Teflon (Registered Trade Mark) particles have been applied under heat and pressure. The external diameter of the discs 3 is preferably about 38 mm in the case where the cassette has a 41.5 mm spacing between the reel hubs. It is satisfactory to use Telfon particles of a size about 1y.
As shown in Fig. 4, the discs 3 are mounted on the respective reel hubs 4 on the right and left sides within each cassette half 1. When the take-up of the tape is started, the discs 3 rotate within the cassette halves in company with the rotation of the tape, al- though the wound tape body, when fully wound up is slightly larger than the discs 3 and is determined by the desired recording time. As the diameter of the wound-tape body on the draw-off side decreases, the diameter of the woundtape body on the take-up side increases, so that the discs 3 on the take-up side rotate together with the wound-tape body. Thus, even in cases that the side edges of the tape extend in a seaweed shape with long periods of use resulting in increasing frictional force between the side edges of the tape and the discs 3, and that the surface of the discs 3 become coarse which renders the slidability of the tape insufficient, there is no risk that the take-up torque of the tape increases to a level to stop the tape and to break it, because of the fact that the discs 3, 3 themselves rotate together with the reel hubs 4. Furthermore, since the tape can be smoothly rotated at all times, there is no adverse effect upon the speed of the tape and/or wow flutter.

Claims (4)

1. A cartridge type tape cassette characterised in that members providing engagement surfaces for the edges of the tape within the cassette are rotatably mounted on the reel hubs on both sides of the tape.
2. A cassette according to Claim 1, characterised in that said members are of disc form.
3. A cassette according to Claim 2, wherein said members have a diameter substantially the same size as the fully wound-up tape.
4. A cassette substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawings.
