Description
SPECIFICATION
Structure for covering a sensor of an instrument
The present invention relates to a structure for covering a sensor, such as a thermo sensor, of a small instrument.
Heretofore, in a small instrument such as a watch, a sensor is directly attached to an inside member of the instrument or secured to an outside member of the instrument by adhesive. However, if a sensor for sensing environmental condition such as temperature is disposed in the case of the instrument, the environmental condition is sensed through the case of the instrument. Therefore, it is impossible to sense it accurately. On the other hand, if the sensor is disposed so as to be exposed to the atmosphere, the sensor senses directly the environmental condition to produce an accurate output. In such a structure, however, the sensor is liable to be broken by impact shock. Further, it is difficult to provide a water-tight seal device around lead wires which are for transmitting signals sensed by the sensor to a control circuit in the instrument.
It is an object of the present invention to eliminate above described disadvantages of the conventional mounting structures of sensors.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a structure for covering for a sensor in a small instrument which may protect the sensor against impact with outer things and which may ensure an accurate detection of environmental conditions.
Further object of the present invention is to provide a structure of a cover for a sensor having a sufficient watertight sealing effect for the cover.
According to the present invention, there is provided a structure for covering a sensor of an instrument comprising a housing of said instrument which has a hole formed through the housing; a cover comprising a flange and a cylindrical body portion, said body portion being opened to the inside of said housing in order to receive said sensor therein; and a watertight sealing member disposed between the outer wall of said body portion and the inner wall of said hole, whereby said cover being secured to said housing by engagement of said flange with said housing and by engagement of the body portion with said watertight sealing member.
Other features of the present invention will become more apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a sectional view showing a mounting structure of a cover for a sensor according to the present invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a second embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a third embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of a fourth embodiment of the present invention; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view of a modification of structure shown in Figure 4.
Referring to Figure 1, numeral 1 designates a glass
as a part of a housing of an electronic wristwatch
(not shown). A cover 3 is provided for a thermo
sensor 2. The cover 3 is made of corrosion resisting
material such as stainless steel or synthetic resin and
comprises a top 4 having a flange 5 and a cylindrical
body portion 6 downwardly extending from the top.
The diameter of the flange 5 is larger than that of an
opening 7 formed in the glass. The body portion 6
has a peripheral groove 8 for receiving an O-ring 10, a groove 11 for receiving a stop ring 12 and an inner
hollow portion 13 for receiving the sensor 2. The groove 11 is adapted to be adjacent to the underside of the glass 1 when the cover 3 is inserted into the opening 7.
The cover 3 with the O-ring 10 in the groove 8 is inserted into the opening 7 until the flange 5 engages with a surface 14 of the glass 1. Then, the stop ring 12 is engaged with the groove 11 so that the upper surface of the periphery of the stop ring 12 is engaged with the underside of the glass 1. Thus, the cover 3 is secured to the glass 1. The O-ring 10 is compressed between the glass 1 and cover 3 to provide a sufficient watertight sealing effect. The sensor 2 secured to a movement 15 of the watch is inserted into the inner hollow portion 13. Thus, the sensor 2 is placed closer to the outside environment.
In accordance with the present invention, the cover protects the sensor from the impact with outer things as well as the water proof is ensured by a sufficient watertight sealing. Further, since the sensor is placed at a closer position to the outside, it makes it possible to accurately sense environmental conditions. Accordingly, the sensor in the small instrument manifests effective performance. Since the cover is secured to the glass with a stop ring or a projection, the cover of the sensor can be easily replaced.
Figure 2 shows a second embodiment of the present invention. The body portion 6 of the cover 3 has several axial slits 16 formed in lower portion than the groove 8forthe O-ring 10 and outward projections 17 formed on the bottom periphery. Each projection has a bevelled guide portion 19. Other structure is the same as the first embodiment and the same parts thereof are indentified with the same reference numerals as Figure 1.
When the cover 3 is inserted into the opening 7, the body portion 6 is contracted with aid of slits 16 and, at the end of the insertion, the projection 17 engages with the underside of the glass 1 so that the cover 3 is secured to the glass 1.
Referring to Figure 3, showing a third embodiment of the present invention, a cover 20 comprises an inner hollow portion 21, a cylindrical body portion 22 and a flange 23 formed on the periphery of a top 24.
The movement 15 is secured to a watch case 26 and the glass 1 is mounted on the case 26 interposing a packing 27. The cover 20 is inserted into the opening 7 interposing a packing 25.
Figure 4 shows a fourth embodiment of the present invention. A flange 28 is formed on a bottom periphery of the body portion 22 of the cover 20.
Accordingly, the cover 20 is inserted into the opening 7 from the underside of the glass 1 interposing the packing 25. In this embodiment a top 29 of the cover 20 is flush with the surface 14 of the glass 1.
Although the cover in above described embodiments is provided in the glass, it may be provided in a case of a small instrument. Figure 5 shows such a modification. The cover 20 is inserted into an opening 30 of the case 26 interposing the packing 25.
In addition the flange 28 is welded to an inner wall 31 of the case 26 by projection welding, so that the cover is securely engaged wth the case 26.
