Abstract
211,837. Nielebock, W. Feb. 23, 1923, [Convention date]. Combined fluid-actuated and mechanical gears; with auxiliary valves. - In a compound engine wherein the main-fluid distribution is effected by a single valve, the auxiliary valve controlling the main valve is formed as a piston slide valve, and is moved in one direction by fluid pressure and reversed by the low pressure piston. In a tandemcylinder engine, Fig. 1, the main valve p alternately puts the supply z into communication with the high-pressure cylinder passages i, and the low-pressure cylinder passages t, u alternately into communication with these respectively and the exhaust. The auxiliary-valve chest communicates with the high-pressure cylinder through passages g, h, i, with the main-valve chest by a passage k, and with the atmosphere m. In the position shown, the valve p has been moved to the left, and the valve e to the right, by fluid supplied from cylinder a through passage g. The pistons c, d now move to the left, and the high-pressure fluid entering the right of cylinder a passes to the valve-chests and holds the valves. When the piston d engages the tappet f, the valves and fluid-passage connections are reversed, the chest o exhausting through k, m, and the fluid entering at z moving the valve p to the right. In a modification applied to a steamdriven compressor, the high and low-pressure power cylinders are arranged side by side and in tandem with the compressor cylinders. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a gear wherein the valve p controls a single, double-acting cylinder. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
