Abstract
A hydrogel which when dried produces a gel having pores of such size that 30 DEG C. and 22 m.m. partial pressure of water vapour it contains 21 per cent of water; is treated with a dilute solution of alkali, such as caustic soda, so as to adsorb the alkali, and is then after washing treated with a dilute solution of a salt of a metal capable of forming a catalyst so that an oxide of such metal is precipitated within the hydrogel, after which the hydrogel is washed and dried. The product may be treated to reduce the catalytic metal compound to the metallic state. The invention is described with reference to silica hydrogel, but is stated to be applicable to the hydrogels of other substances, for instance tungstis acid, stannic oxide, and alumina. The drying may be effected at 75-120 DEG C. with or without a further heating to 400 DEG C., or the material may be placed in a vacuum, with or without heat. In an example silica hydrogel is soaked in sodium hydroxide solution of between .05 N. and .005 N. strength for 8 to 10 hours, washed, and then soaked in a 0.1 molar solution of ferric nitrate for 5 to 6 hours and is finally washed and dried. During the drying nitrogen oxides are expelled from the basic ferric nitrate present in the gel. A gel of this kind is said to give a 90 per cent conversion to sulphur trioxide of a 7 per cent mixture of sulphur dioxide and air. Specifications 136,543 and 212,065 are referred to.
