Abstract
Rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings have a locked butt joint extending throughout the length of the bearing. The joint comprises a lug (7), which is provided on one of the edge portions forming the butt joint and is received by a notch (8) formed in the other of said edge portions. In order to avoid a waste of material on cutting the blank, the notch and lug have the same contour and the head of the lug has the configuration of a rectangle with rounded corners. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Sheet metal blank for use in the manufacture of rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings
This invention relates to a sheet metal blank which has been stamped from a material for sliding surface bearings and is to be used in the manufacture of rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings having a butt joint, which extends throughout the length of the bearing.
Rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings are often used in motor vehicles. In a relaxed state a rolled bushing is non-circular and its butt joint is open. When the rolled bushing has been forced into position, it is usually circular and its butt joint is closed. The butt joint desirably extends parallel to the axis of the bushing. In order to prevent the bushing from catching on each other adjacent to the open butt joints during the manufacture of the bushings and when they are in transit and in order to facilitate the forcibie insertion of such bushings into the bearing housing, rolled bushings may be closed by locking the butt joint. In the manufacture of rolled bushing having a locked butt joint, at least one Ushaped notch is formed in one edge portion of the section cut from a strip and two horns which extend at right angles to the axis of the bushing are provided on those parts of said edge portion which adjoin said notch on opposite sides thereof. The opposite edge portion of the strip section is provided with a lug, which consists of a neck and a round head.
The neck is provided at its root with undercuts, which extend behind the adjacent edge portion substantially at right angles to the axis of the bushing. As the bushing for a sliding surface bearing is rolled up, the lug is inserted into the U-shaped notch and a positive connection is achieved in that the two horns are deformed into the respective undercuts. But bushings which are intended for use in sliding surface bearings and have a locked butt joint have the serious disadvantage that the lines of cut required for the above-mentioned design of the joint-forming edge portions of the strip section involve a waste of material in an amount up to 20%, depending upon the diameter and/or the width of the bearing.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sheet metal blank which consists of a material for sliding surface bearings and is intended for use in the manufacture or rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings and which is so designed that rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings can be made from the blank without waste of material.
According to the present invention there is provided a sheet metal blank which has been stamped from a bearing material for sliding surface bearings and is to be used in the manufacture of rolled bushings for sliding surface bearings having a butt joint, which extends throughout the length of the bearing, wherein at least one lug is formed in one of the edge portions of the blank which, when the blank is rolled to form the bushing, constitutes one edge of the butt joint and at least one notch is formed in the other of said edge portions and is adapted to receive the or a respective lug to lock the bushing in a rolled condition, and wherein the or each lug consists of a head and a neck and has the same contour as a notch, the head of the lug having substantially the configuration of a rectangle with rounded corners, the length b of the neck of the lug being 0.8 to 1.4 times the thickness of the bearing material and the length a of those sides of the head of the lug which are parallel to the ends of the bushing being 0.6 to 1.2 times said thickness. Preferably, the length b of the neck of the lug is 1.0 to 1.2 times the thickness of the material for sliding surface bearings and the length a of those sides of the head of the lug which in the bushing are parallel to its end faces is 0.8 to 1.0 times said thickness.
When the locking means are designed in accordance with the invention the sheet metal blank can be formed by cuts along lines having identical configurations, and when the strip section is curled or rolled to form the bushing the lug can be inserted into the notch so as to provide a positive joint without the need for deforming the bearing material. More than one lug can be provided for engagement in a respective notch is required.
In order to enable the invention to be more readily understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate diagrammatically and by way of example an embodiment thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a stamped sheet metal blank, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a sliding surface bearing bushing obtained from the sheet metal blank by a curling or rolling operation.
Referring to Fig. 1, there is shown a composite strip of bearing material consisting of a backing steel layer and an aluminium alloy bearing layer. A sheet metal blank 4 cut from said strip has edge portions 5 and 6, which extend generally parallel to the axis of the intended bearing bushing. The edge portion 5 is formed with a lug 7, which has the same contour as a notch 8 formed in the edge portion 6. The lug 7 comprises a generally rectangular head 10 having rounded corners and a neck 9. The length b of the neck 9 is 1.2 times the thickness of the composite strip of bearing material and the length a of those sides of the head 10 which in the bushing are parallel to its end faces is 0.8 times that thickness. As a result of the stamping operation, the material of the blank is tapered at the edge portion 5 provided with the lug 7 and at the edge portion 6 provided with the notch 8. This taper does not adversely affect the installation and function of the rolled bushing for sliding surface bearings.
Fig. 2 shows the bank rolled or curled to form a bushing with the lug 7 received in the notch 8 to lock the butt joint of the bushing which butt joint extends throughout the length of the bushing.
