Abstract

214,080. Baines, L. M. April 10, 1923. Springs, arrangement of; equalizing load on wheels and springs; guiding vertical play.- Relates to spring suspensions for vehicles in which each wheel axle is connected to levers pivoted on the chassis, the levers of one axle being connected to those of the other axle by an inextensible linkage comprising a pair of rigid transverse swing-bars pivotally connected to each other. Each lever is non-resiliently connected to its respective wheel axle, and the suspension springs, instead of being arranged between the levers and the axles as heretofore, are arranged between the levers and chassis. The front and rear axles H, J, are connected by ball-and-socket or other universal joints respectively to the forwardly and rearwardly directed arms D<1>, E<1>, and F<1>, G<1> of the levers, the downwardly directed arms D<2> - - G<2> of which are connected to the swing bars A, A' which are adjustably linked together by a tie-rod C. The pivots of the levers are preferably movable in vertical slots L in brackets B<1> on the chassis, movement of the levers being controlled by helical, laminated, or other springs M. The front axle is situated below the axis of rotation of its wheels. The connection between each lever and the adjacent swing-bar may comprise loosely interlinked shackles K as shown, pivotally connected shackles, or tie-rods &c. The horizontal arms of the levers at the front and rear of the vehicle may differ in length; vertical guides may be provided to take side stresses on the levers, and stops may be fitted on the chassis to check excessive movement of the levers.
