Description
SPECIFICATION
Drain trap
The present invention relates to a drain trap for preventing the rise of offensive odours and the intrusion of worms, rats, etc.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a drain trap which is small in size through which water can flow straight down without fear of the pipe becoming clogged with untreated refuse.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a drain trap which includes a valve which can change its degree of opening in proportion to the rate of flow of waste water.
The drain trap of the present invention comprises a pipe body having a waste water outlet inclined relative to the axis of the pipe body; means projecting from an inner wall of the pipe body at one side of the inclined outlet opening and positioned at an obtuse angle with respect to the wall, said projecting means partially blocking said drain opening; valve means pivotally mounted at or adjacent to the projecting means and urged normally to close the pipe opening; support means for the valve means; and a cylindrical member which has a diameter larger than that of the pipe body and is attached contiguously to the pipe body at the outlet end of the pipe body around the outlet opening.
In order that the invention may be fully understood a preferred embodiment of drain trap in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view showing the mode of use of a conventional drain trap;
Figure 2 is a front view of a drain trap according to the present invention showing its mode of use;
Figure 3 is a front view of the embodiment of drain trap in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the drain trap shown in Fig. 3;
Figure 5 is a bottom view of the drain trap shown in Fig. 4; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line VI-VI in Fig. 3.
To the drain pipe of a sink or the like is connected a trap for preventing the rise of offensive odours and the intrusion of worms, rats, etc. Such traps, as shown in Fig. 1, have heretofore used an
S bend pipe 21, one end of which is connected to a drain port 23 of a sink 22 and the other end of which is connected to a drain pipe 24. With this conventional bent pipe 21, water is allowed to stay in the bent portion 25 to prevent offensive odours rising to the sink. However, since the water in the bent portion 25 is waste water, it may itself give rise to offensive odours. Moreover, in the case where the bent portion 25 becomes dry after the sink has not been used for a long period of time, pests may climb into the sink. Furthermore, if solids, such as untreated refuse, flow into the trap, together with waste water, the solids are apt to remain in the bent portion 25.Additionally, the presence of the bent portion requires a larger width of trap, and thus a wider space for the trap.
The drain trap of the present invention, which overcomes the above-mentioned problems, is characterised in that the opening of a pipe body for waste water is inclined and the inclined opening is partially blocked by a projecting flange which guides waste water towards an acute-angled portion of the inclined opening, and in that a valve which is opened in proportion to the rate of flow of waste water by the pressure of the latter is associated with the flange.
Referring now to Figs. 3 to 6, the reference numeral 1 denotes a pipe body formed of a synthetic resin or a corrosion-resistant metal, and the numeral 2 denotes a pipe opening for waste water on the outlet side, the pipe opening 2 being inclined at an angle of 45 degrees. The numeral 3 denotes a projecting flange integral with the wall 4 of the pipe 1. The wall 4 makes an obtuse angle with respect to the inclined pipe opening 2. The pipe opening 2 is blocked partially by the projecting flange 3. The numeral 5 denotes a valve which comprises a valve body 6 and a counterbalance portion 7. The valve body 6 is shaped as a circle with a segment cut away, thereby to close the pipe opening 2.The counterbalance portion 7, which is in the shape of a semicircle, is contiguous with the valve body 6 and is inclined at an angle of approximately 135 with respect to the plane of the valve body, viewed in side elevation. On the underside of the counterbalance portion 7 is fixed a weight 8 by bonding or other means. The numeral 9 denotes a bearing device provided at the angled portion of the valve 5. Two bearing devices 9 are provided. A shaft 10 extending through the bearing devices 9 is supported by support arms 11 which are mounted in opposed relation to each other at the two ends of the projecting margin of the flange 3, whereby the valve 5 is supported for pivotal movement about the shaft 10. Also the valve body 6 is normally urged in the direction to close the pipe opening 2 by the weight 8.The numeral 12 denotes a space formed to give freedom for the movement of the counterbalance portion 7. The space 12 is provided by having a cylindrical sleeve 13 of a diameter larger than that of the pipe body 1 positioned around the pipe body 1 in such a manner that it is fitted over the pipe body 1 on the side of the pipe opening 2 in which the valve 5 is mounted. The numeral 14 denotes a packing disposed between the pipe opening 2 and the valve 5, and the numeral 15 denotes a socket for connecting the drain trap of the present invention to a drain pipe.
The operation of the drain pipe of the present will now be described. In using the drain trap of the present invention, like conventional drain traps, it is connected to the drain pipe of a sink or the like. Figure 2 shows an example of such a mode of use, in which the numerals 16,17 and 18 denote the drain trap of the present invention, a sink and a drain pipe respectively.
In the trap 16 of the present invention, the pipe opening 2 is closed by the valve 5, so that if offen sive odours rise from the socket side, the offensive odours are prevented from passing up into the interior of pipe 1 by the valve 5.
When water is used in the sink 17, it flows from the drain port of the sink 17 into the drain pipe 18 and then into the pipe body 1 of the trap 16 of the present invention. In the case where the amount of waste water is small, the waste water flows down along the inner wall surface of the pipe body 1 and then the waste water flowing along the inner surface of the pipe wall 4 is conducted on to the upper surface of the valve body 6 of the valve 5 by being guided by the upper surface of the flange 3.
The waste water thus conducted on to the upper surface of the valve body 6 flows obliquely downwards along this upper surface rather than pushing open the valve 5 directly, thus exerting pressure at an angle. As a result the valve 5 moves pivotally slightly in a counterclockwise direction as shown in
Fig. 6 by virtue of the combined pressure of the obliquely acting water pressure and the pressure of any other wastes in the pipe body 1, thus allowing the waste water to flow through the slightly opened valve down into the socket 15. Even if the interior of the socket 15 is full of offensive odours, these will not rise into the pipe body 1 because the valve 5 is opened only slightly in proportion to the amount of waste water.In the case of a large amount of waste water flowing into the pipe body 1, the waste water pushes open the valve 5, flows through the pipe opening 2 narrowed by the flange 3 and flushes into the socket 15, so that there is no room for the offensive odours to rise.
When the drainage of waste into the pipe 1 stops, the valve body 6 becomes free from any external force exerted thereon, with the result that the valve 5 is moved pivotally in a clockwise direction as shown in Fig.6 by virtue of the weight 8 and closes the pipe opening 2.
Because the drain trap of the present invention is constructed as described hereinabove, the drain trap can be connected to a drain pipe without requiring such a large space as for the conventional bent pipe, and waste water flows straight down, thus eliminating the danger of the pipe clogging with refuse, as can happen with a bent pipe. Furthermore, since the valve can change its degree of opening in proportion to the rate of flow of waste water, it can prevent offensive odours from rising due to an excessively opened exit hole. Also, since the valve closes the pipe opening when waste water is not draining away, this also prevents the intrusion of worms, rats, etc. Thus extremely useful results are achieved by the drain trap of the present invention.
