Abstract

An assembly for the stile of a sliding door comprises an outer channel member 10, an inner channel member 20 and a pvc insert member 30. Member 20 is internally asymmetrical but externally symmetrical and the external faces of both of its side walls 21, 22 have formations whereby either face can locate against a complementary formation on the inner face of one side 11 of channel member 10. Member 30 has a barbed leg portion 31 retained in a slot in member 10, a limb 32 retained in a recess in the inner face of the other side of channel member 10, and a limb 33 whose outer face has a formation which is a mirror image of the complementary formation on the inner face of side 11 of member 10. Member 20 can thus be placed either way up in member 10 so that opposite handed meeting stiles can be assembled from a single common set of the members. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements Relating to Framing Assemblies This invention relates to framing assemblies and has a particularly useful but not exclusive application in the construction of door and window frames made from extruded sections.
According to this invention there is provided a framing assembly comprising an elongate channel-section outer member, an elongate channel-section inner member the external faces of the side walls of which are mirror images one of the other and have a formation adapted to interlock with a complementary formation on the internal surface of one of the side walls of the outer member, the inner member having a base which is narrower than that of the outer member, and an elongate insert member which is retained in engagement with the inner face of the other side wall of the outer member and having facing the inner face of said one side wall of the outer member a formation which is a mirror image of said complementary formation, the arrangement being such that when the insert member and the outer member are fitted together the inner member can be snapped into locking engagement with the insert and outer members.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1, 2 and 3 are sectional views of the first, second and third members of a framing assembly according to the invention, and Figures 4 and 5 illustrate respectively the two ways in which the members can be assembled.
The assemblies shown in Figures 4 and 5 are both made up from members as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 and are intended to form the handed meeting stiles of the frames for a pair of sliding doors which are movable relative to each other between an open position in which the doors are in more or less fully overlapping relationship and a closed position in which the two meeting stiles interengage to form a seal.
Figure 1 shows the outer member 10 of each stile in cross-section. The member 10 is extruded from aluminium. One side wall 11 of the member is springy and has on its inner face a projection 12 with a lengthwise extending rebate 13. The wall 1 1 has along the inner face of its free edge a barb 14. The other side wall 1 5 is formed with a recess 16, and an internally barbed slot 17 is formed in an internal corner portion disposed between the side wall 15 and the base wall 18.
Figure 2 shows the inner member 20 of each stile in cross-section. The member is of channel section and is fabricated from two aluminium extrusions 20a, 20b held together by polyvinylchloride extrusions 20c which form a thermal break. Each of the extrusions 20c forms a mechanical interlock with both of the aluminium extrusions 20a, 20b. The outer faces of the two side walls 21, 22 of the member are mirror images one of the other, being each formed with a recess 23 shaped to receive the barb 14 of the outer member and with a corner 24 between the base 25 and the side wall shaped to fit snugly in the rebate 13 of the outer member when the barb 14 is engaged in recess '23. Extrusion 20b differs from extrusion 20a in that the formations which interlock with the pvc extrusions 20c are spaced from the side wall 22 by two webs 26 forming a hollow 27.The bottom portion of the member is thus asymmetrical with respect to the plane of symmetry of the outer faces of the wide walls 21, 22, which plane extends at right angles to the general plane of the base 25.
The third elongate member 30 of the assembly is shown in Figure 5 and is of generally Y-section.
The member is extruded from rigid polyvinylchloride. The leg 31 of the member is formed with barbs and is proportioned to locate firmly in the barbed slot 17 in member 10, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. The outer limb 32 of the member lodges in recess 16 and its free end abuts the remote side wall of the recess 16. The inner limb 33 is thinner and of a springy construction, and is formed on its outer surface with a barb 34 and a rebated projection 35 which are substantially mirror images of the barb 14 and rebated projection 12 on the side wall 11 of member 10.
In assembling the components, member 30 is first engaged in the channel section member 10 as shown in Figures 4 and 5 and member 20 is then placed in the desired attitude and pressed into the gap between the inner limb 33 of member 30 and the side wall 11 of member 10, the barbs 14 and 34 respectively snapping into engagement in the two recesses 23 and the corners 24 lodging firmly in the rebates of projections 12, 35.
It will be clear from Figures 4 and 5 that the illustrated construction provides a means by which the handed meeting stiles of a sliding window or door incorporating an offset thermal break can be assembled from a set of extruded components common to both assemblies.
1. A framing assembly comprising an elongate channel-section outer member, an elongate channel-section inner member the external faces of the side walls of which are mirror images one of the other and have a formation adapted to interlock with a complementary formation on the internal surface of one of the side walls of the outer member, the inner member having a base which is narrower than that of the outer member, and an elongate insert member which is retained in engagement with the inner face of the other side wall of the outer member and having facing the inner face of said one side wall of the outer member a formation which is a mirror image of said complementary formation, the arrangement being such that when the insert member and the outer member are fitted together the inner member can be snapped into locking engagement with the insert and outer members.
