Abstract

A portable lamp, such as a motorists lamp, is provided with a top cover formed as a tray for the temporary storage of small components and having a light transmitting base to illuminate items stored in the tray.

Description

SPECIFICATION Portable lights This invention reiates to portable lights such as battery operated lights for use, for example by motorists.
The invention provides a portable light including a lamp housing having a top-cover formed as a tray for the temporary storage of small components, the base of the tray being formed at least in part of transparent or translucent material so that when the lamp is lit, components resting in the tray are clearly visible.
The light is preferably dry-cell battery operated so as to be self contained, but could alternatively have a lead for connection to a motor vehicle battery.
The tray is preferably sub-divided into a number of separate sections to facilitate further the orderly storage of components and, if desired, small tools.
Although the invention may be embodied in a "light-box" in which the lamp serves merely to illuminate the contents of the tray from below, it may be designed to serve additionally as a safety or warning light for use by motorists when working on roadside repairs of their vehicles, e.g. when changing a wheel at dusk or night.
In this case, the housing conveniently takes the form of a drum having a base section containing dry-cell batteries, the side wall of the drum comprising one or more annular red reflector wall portions and one or more translucent amber sections lit from within by the lamp.
The cover member closes the upper end of the drum and may be removable to facilitate changing the lamp bulb. The light may have a simple pivoting bail handle for convenience of storage.
It would also be possible in a more elaborate fitting to provide for a flashing warning light, with an auxiliary lamp serving to illuminate the tray.
These and other modifications will, of course, be within the scope of the present invention.
1. A portable light comprising a lamp housing containing one or more lamps providing an illuminating and/or warning function, the lamp housing having a top cover formed as a tray for the temporary storage of small components or tools, the base of the tray being formed at least in part of transparent or translucent material so that when the lamp (or lamps) is (or are) lit, components resting on the tray are clearly visible.
2. A portable light as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tray is subdivided into a number of separate sections.
