Abstract
214,722. Munyard, A. R. Jan. 25, 1923. Dolls. - A doll is provided with mechanism which produces changes of facial expression when the doll is picked up and rocked. The mechanism is supported by a base 1, Fig. 1, mounted on a seating 8 within the head, and comprises two pendulums 11, 27. The pendulum 11 swings about a wire 14. and the upper end of its rod 12 engages teeth 17 formed on the sides of a rackbar 16 which slides through supports 20. A pawl 21, Fig. 2, is pressed into engagement with the teeth by a spring 24 and retains the bar 16 when it has been moved by the rod 12. The pendulum 27 swings about a wire 26, and the upper end 30 of its rod 28 is engaged by a spring-pressed pawl 36 which extends through a slot 18 in the bar 16. The face of the doll is made of rubber or similarelastic substance, or of a rubber covering on a base of harder substance. The eyelids 47, 48 and the eyeballs 49 are movable, and tear drops 54 of glass are fitted in recesses in the eye sockets. The eyebrows, lips, cheeks, and tears are connected by cords 70 to the rack-bar 16, and the eyelids are connected by cords 75 with the rod of the pendulum 27. A cord 79, Fig. 2. also connects the upper end of the pendulum-rod 12 with the pivots of one of the legs of the doll, or to a lever operated by a push button. When the parts of the mechanism are in their normal position, the face has a fretful expression. By rocking the doll, the pendulum 11 moves the rackbar 16 gradually, thus raising the eyebrows, withdrawing the tears and causing the lips to part. The bar 16, when it reaches the end of its travel.. pushes back the pawl 36 and releases the pendulum 27 the movement of which causes the eyelids to open and close. By laying the doll on its right side, or by moving the legs and therefore the cord 79, the upper end of the pendulum rod 12 engages a stop 22, Fig. 2, on the pawl 21 and releases the rack, and the face then resumes its fretful expression.
