Abstract

This bench is designed to hook onto an existing deck or table top and has a built in vice 6 which can be adjusted for right or left hand use and a toolrack 9 which folds down flush with the surrounding upstands 2. The front retaining strip 4 can be adapted to form an 'L' shape if corner fitting is desired. The toolstrip utilises magnets, but slots can also be cut. Handgrips 7 are cut in to the sides of the base; holes 8 are also drilled into the base to accept pegs or clamps. The folding tool rack can be locked in position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hookbench This invention relates to a compact work bench or top.
Full size work benches are very strongly constructed items. They are heavy, and being free standing require a considerable amount of floor area. Their size, weight and expense make them impractical for many situations.
The Hook bench provides an alternative to a full size bench. It is extremely compact and primarily designed for home and school use. It is unique in having a top/base as thick as those generally found on full size benches and at the same time being designed to hook onto an ordinary desk or table. It is portable and incorporates a vice and tool rack.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows the bench in the open position.
Figure 2 shows the bench closed up.
Referring to the drawing the Hook bench consists of a robust timber base similar in thickness to the top of a full size bench. Hand grips are cut into the sides to simplify lifting. A restraining strip runs along the underside of the front edge. The middle section of this strip is detachable and can be fitted to the underside of either side; this is to facilitate corner fitting on the desk or table. The base has holes drilled into it and these accept pegs or clamps to help hold the work piece in position.
Provision can easily be made for fitting a carver's screw.
A vice is fitted to the front of the bench and can be pivoted for either right or left hand use.
The bench features upstands and the integral tool rack folds down inside and flush with the tops of the upstands.
The tool rack can be dismantled and removed if required. Tools can be held in the rack by magnets or alternatively 'tailor made' slots can be cut. The tool rack can be partially or completely covered by plywood if desired.
A safety guard is built into the design and locking pins are fitted.
