Abstract

214,823. Helfenstein, A. April 16, 1923. Furnace details.-Continuous furnace electrodes b are formed in place by maintaining a working electrode, of such length that a substantial portion thereof extends outwardly from the part a to which the current is supplied, moulding and baking the raw material m by an externally heated mould e, and finally allowing the baked portion to cool, the moulding, baking, and cooling operations being carried out during the normal feeding operation of the electrode. In the case of large electrodes an inner mould is also used and may be electrically heated if desired. The mould m is surrounded by a heat insulating body f forming a combustion. chamber f<2> having gas connections i and inlets for air to ensure combustion. The mould and combustion chamber are supported by an electrode clamp e engaging the feeding screws d. After a new section has been formed on the electrode the set screws p are operated to grip the electrode, the clamp c is loosened and the mould and combustion chamber are then raised to the necessary position for forming another section. Anchor pieces l are baked into the top portions of the sections to secure good connections one with another. Fig. 4 shows the method adopted when hollow electrodes are to be formed. A series of inner and outer moulds e, e<2> made in segments are employed, and the furnace gases pass through an internal pipe u to the combustion chamber f<2>, the latter being provided with air inlets y and connections to an exhaust main z. A graphite filling t is arranged between the heating devices and the moulds to ensure easy motion during the feeding of the electrode. The moulds e may be fed into the furnace with the electrode, or mav be removed after passing out of the combustion chamber.
