Abstract

A longitudinal slide feed device for a machine tool such as a lathe, has two slides (5, 15) arranged on a common guideway (2). Each slide is driven by a respective motor (12, 22) that drives transmission gears (9, 10; 19, 20) that mesh with screw nuts (8, 18) that threadingly engage a non-rotatably mounted screw threaded shaft (3). The slides (5, 15) can be driven independently according to a desired predetermined program. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A longitudinal slide feed device for a machine tool The invention relates to a longitudinal slide feed device for a machine tool, in which a plurality of longitudinal slides are arranged on the same guideway.
It is known to use lead screws, driven by a feed motor, to drive a plurality of longitudinal slides of a machine tool on one or more guideways. In order to permit different directions of movement and speeds, it is also known from the DE PS 1477 307 to associate a screw drive with each longitudinal slide, each of the slides being connected to its screw drive so as to move with the latter by way of a screw nut.
The disadvantages of this solution lie in the fact that a plurality of screws, in particular expensive ball screws, have to be provided, and in the space which they occupy.
DE AS 2731 860 describes a drive device for two bottom slides which can be moved along a common longitudinal guide. The feed motor drives a toothed rack by way of a feed screw, the toothed rack being connected to a corresponding bottom slide so as to move with the latter by means of a toothed wheel.
This feed device, which operates with only one driven screw in connection with a toothed rack, is expensive owing to the necessity of coupling devices for each longitudinal slide. Furthermore, the longitudinal slides can only travel in the same direction and at the same speed.
With a view to overcoming the disadvantages of the prior art, the present invention provides a longitudinal slide feed device for a machine tool, comprising first and second longitudinal slides arranged on the same guideway, each slide having associated therewith a respective drive motor, a non-rotatably mounted screw threaded shaft, a screw nut threadingly engaging the shaft, and transmission means for coupling drive from the motor to the screw nut such as to drive the slide along the guideway.
The invention thus provides a feed device which permits the longitudinal slides to be positioned and moved in both directions and at different feed speeds independently of one another, by means of a simple and compact structure.
Preferably the motors for the feed drives are direct-current motors for which at least one is provided with a measuring system for the feed paths of the individual longitudinal slides.
The functions of the individual feed devices for the longitudinal slides may be controlled in a known manner by an input program, for which purpose each feed drive has to be separately programmed. Each longitudinal slide is driven from its motor via the transmission means to the screw nut. The latter rolls along the fixed screw threaded shaft and thus moves the longitudinal slide according to the program.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of illustrative example with reference to the single Figure of the accompanying drawing which is a plan view, partially in section, of the bed of a lathe with two longitudinal slides.
Two longitudinal slides 5; 15 are displaceably arranged on the bed 1 of a lathe with the guideways 2. A screw 3 is non-rotatably and non-displaceably secured at the bed ends in screw bearings 4. A housing 6; 16 is in each case externally secured to each of the longitudinal slides 5; 15, in which housings screw nuts 8; 18 are rotatably and axially non-displaceably arranged in bearings 7; 17. A motor 12;22, preferably a direct current motor with a measuring system 13; 23, is in each case flanged to the housings 6;16. The motor shafts 11; 21 of the motors 12; 22 are connected by way of toothed wheels 10; 9 or 20; 19, respectively, to the screw nuts 8; 18 so as to rotate with the latter, the toothed wheels 9; 19 being secured to the screw nuts 8; 18. The screws 3; 13 are preferably formed as ball screws and the screw nuts 8; 18 as ball nuts.Cross slides with tool supports (not shown) are arranged in a known manner on the longitudinal slides 5; 15.
The feed drives, from the two motors 12; 22 via the toothed wheels 10; 9 or 20; 19, respectively, and the screw nuts 8; 18, connected to the screw 3, for the two longitudinal drives 5; 15 provide the following possibilities for machining a workpiece in connection with a known program control: drive for both longitudinal slides in the same or opposite directions at the same or different speeds, drive for one longitudinal slide when the second longitudinal slide is at a standstill, for example for carrying out recessing work after positioning the slide, drive for positioning both slides, for carrying out special working stages, using cross slides.
1. A longitudinal slide feed device for a machine tool, comprising first and second longitudinal slides arranged on the same guideway, each slide having associated therewith a respective drive motor, a non rotatably mounted screw threaded shaft, a screw nut threadingly engaging the shaft, and transmission means for coupling drive from the motor to the screw nut such as to drive the slide along the guideway.
2. A longitudinal slide feed device according to claim 1, wherein the motors comprise direct current electric drive motors.
3. A longitudinal slide feed device according to claim 2, including for at least one of said motors a measuring system for measuring displacement of the slide along the guideway.
4. A longitudinal slide feed device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
5. A machine tool including a device according to any preceding claim.
