Abstract
215,422. Jones, T. A. Feb. 2, 1923. Compound or articulated road vehicles. Relates to a compound vehicle in which the front end of a trailer is supported from the rear of a tractor by a universal joint comprising spherical shells fitting one within the other. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the trailer 2 carries a part spherical shell 1 which rests in a similar shell 3 on the tractor centrally above the rear axle, the two being connected by a pin 6 which may be fitted with a spring to force the two shells together. The hole in the shell 3 is large enough to allow free movement in all directions. The spherical shells may be inverted. In a modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the universal joint may be arranged between the trailer 2 and an intermediate frame 9 carried by springs 10 directly on the axle 4. The spherical element 3 (on the tractor) is formed forwardly and rearwardly with recesses for trunnions 13 attached to the other spherical element. Parts 14 may serve as knife, edge or curved bearing elements. Several radial springs may be provided tending to retain the spherical elements in their central positions.
