Abstract

A linear movement tuning key for the peg head of a stringed musical instrument. A key includes a generally cylindrical body portion (19) having a radially extending flange (22) at the upper end, upon which is mounted a guide roller (46) having its axis (47) generally co-planar with the body of an instrument string (13). The roller (46) is adapted for receiving the string (13) thereacross and rotating therewith for direct orthogonal transfer of string tensioning forces. A tuning piston (16) is mounted within a central axial opening (21) in the cylindrical body portion of the key with the lower inner portion of the axial opening (25) being threaded to receive a screw actuation ram (34). The lower, outer portion (23) of the key body (19) is also threaded to receive a cylindrical mounting sleeve (26), the upper edge (28) of which bears against the under surface of the peg head (11) to rigidly secure the key body portion within the peg head (11). The lower end of the screw actuation ram (34) is rigidly fixed to the central inside portion (33) of a knurled tuning knob (17) which closely overlies and seals against the outer surface of the cylindrical mounting sleeve (26) by means of an O-ring (32). An instrument string (13) is then passed across the guide roller (46) and clamped relative to the upper end of the tuning piston (16). In this manner, axial movement of the tuning piston (16) imparts a direct tensioning force to the orthogonally disposed body of the instrument string (13) by its frictional engagement with and movement around the guide roller (46).
