Abstract
215,532. Davy Bros., Ltd., and Jones, J. C. April 7,1923. Rolling.-In a rolling-mill having one or more rolls driven through a universal shaft means are provided to facilitate changing the rolls by shifting a coupling-box on the universal shaft out of engagement with the coacting coupling-member and adjustably supporting the shaft in such a position as to allow the change of rolls to be most readily effected. The upper universal shaft 11 carrying a splined coupling-box 14 engaging a corresponding member on the roll shaft 13, is surrounded by a capped bearing 15 carried by a cross-girder 16 the arms of which are spring supported on the rams of hydraulic cylinders 21. The springs are not shown in the Figure. The girder 16 also carries hydraulic cylinders 25 having double-acting rams 26 which may be connected to a strap 29 engaging a groove in the coupling-box 14 which may thus be engaged with or disengaged from the roll shaft. The cross girder is adjustably connected to the pinion housing by links 34 to prevent end movement of the universal shaft The coupling-box 38 at the right hand end of the universal shaft 11 may be secured by a cotter 39 but in a modification the hydraulic rams 26 may, when the coupling 14 is in its disengaged position be disengaged from the strap 29 and connected to a strap adapted to operate the coupling 38. The universal shaft 11<a> of the lower roll is similarly provided with hydraulic mechanism for adjusting its position and operating its couplings.
