Abstract

A sound absorption panel comprises a block of sound absorbing material of which the active surface 1 (ie the surface facing and absorbing sound) is ridged, loosely laid flexible water impermeable protective sheeting 2 substantially covering the ridged surface and a perforated protective sheet 3 covering the covered ridged surface. This construction allows the active surface of the block to be protected from water and dust without serious impairment of the sound absorbing properties of the panel. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Sound absorption panels This invention relates to a sound absorption panel.
Sound absorption panels are known which comprise flat-surfaced blocks of sound absorbing material which are faced with perforated protective sheets which may be made of metal. Such panels are effective for reverberation control and in absorptive silencers but may suffer if they are brought into contact with for example water or dust which may affect the sound absorbing material.
It has been proposed that the blocks should be protected by surrounding them with water impermeable flexible protective sheeting, which may be for example, polyethylene polypropylene, PVC or polyester sheets before facing them with the perforated protective sheets. However, when this is done the sound absorbing properties of the panel may be seriously impaired.
This invention comprises sound absorption panels which comprise a block of sound absorbing material of which the active surface (i.e. that which is effective in absorbing sound) is ridged, loosely laid flexible water impermeable protective sheeting substantially covering the ridged surface and a perforated protective sheet covering the covered ridged surface.
It is preferred that the flexible water impermeable protective sheeting should be polyester sheeting, for example polyethylene terphthalate sheeting, suitably that sold under the trade mark 'Melinex', as this has excellent physical properties. The sheeting should not be drawn tightly over any substantial part of the surface. It is suitably up to 50 microns thick.
The surface of the block may be formed into for example wedge like sinusoidal or other shaped ridges. It is preferred that they be shaped such that the portions of the ridged surface of the block contacting the perforated protective sheet are as small a proportion of the total ridged surface of the block as possible, for example at most 15% and preferably at most 10% of the total ridged surface.
The ridges may be for example 10 to 1 000mm preferably 10 to 1 00mm and more preferably 25-100mm deep from peak to trough measured perpendicularly to the plane of the surface and adjacent peaks may be 20 to 600 and preferably 20 to 200mm apart.
The ridges may in plan be linear, curved or angled, for example they may be circular.
The perforated protective sheets are preferably sufficiently rigid and robust to protect the block from mechanical damage under the conditions of use. They are suitably made of metal, for example steel or aluminium, or of other sheet or board materials, for example hard board, PVC or plaster board.
The sound absorbing material may comprise for example mineral wool, glass wool or opencelled foams.
Suitably if any of the surfaces of the block are not ridged they are used as edges or the back of the panel, as if they are also faced with water impermeable protective sheeting their sound absorbing properties will of course be poor.
The panels may be used to face walls, the protective sheeting being secured so as to protect the sound absorbing material or they may be free standing in which case the metal sheeting may be part of a housing surrounding the sound absorbing material and the water impermeable sheeting.
If two opposite sides of the block are to be active surfaces both should be ridged and covered with loosely laid flexible water impermeable protecting sheeting with perforated protective sheets covering both.
The panels may be incorporated into silencers which comprise ducts for gases which may flow in a straight or tortuous path, a substantial area of the surfaces of the silencer facing the path of gas flow being active surfaces of panels according to the invention.
Suitably the path of gas flow is straight and the panels constitute dividers of a duct carrying the gas. In this construction the silencer may comprise a parallel array of spaced panels according to the invention, the spaces between the panels constituting pathways for the gas and the surfaces of the panels facing the pathways being active surfaces.
The panels may be curved; for example they may be formed as hollow cylinders of which the inner surface is active and of which the centre may constitute a duct for gases; very suitably however they are substantially flat.
One form of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a section through a panel according to the invention.
A block of sound absorbing material (1) consisting of resin bonded mineral fibre of density 64kg per cubic metre has an overall thickness of 1 OOmm and is formed as a base 50mm thick surmounted by triangular wedges which may be integral, glued, pinned or laid as separate elements on the base which are 50mm high with 1 00mm bases. The ridges are loosely covered with a sheet of polyethylene terephthalate sheeting (2) of thickness 23 microns which is sold under the trade mark 'Melinex' by Imperial Chemical Industries PLC. A protective facing of 2mm thick steel steel sheet (3) perforated with 1 Omm diameter holes to give 37% open area covers the ridged surface.
The dimensions of the sound absorbing material, the gauge of the water impermeable sheeting, and the gauge and perforation of the perforated protective sheet may be varied in order to meet the requirements of particular duties.
