Abstract

A weighbridge 1 has load cells 3 measuring the weight of a vehicle V. The weighbridge 1 is provided with: a vehicle-sensing apparatus 9 for sensing the approach of the vehicle V, an interrogation apparatus 10 for transmitting interrogation signals to vehicle-identification apparatus 11 relating to its identity and characteristics, apparatus 7 for receiving information from said vehicle-identification apparatus 11, and for carrying out weighing and weight recording operations with said weighbridge. An output means 8 is included for providing an output containing information relating to the vehicle identification and weight. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Weighbridge operation This invention relates to a weighbridge suitable for use in checking the gross laden weight of a vehicle.
There is an increasing need for additional information when using weighbridges which in turn results in an increased processing load. Thus for example it is usually required to compare the gross laden weight measured by the weighbridge with details such as the unladen weight of the vehicle and other individual characteristics thereof.
Conventionally such additional information is man uaily in-put and processed or at least manually input into whatever processing apparatus is used.
This can involve significant delays especially at busy weighbridge stations and also involves the risk of human error.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid or minimize one or more of the above disadvantages.
The present invention provides a weightbridge suitable for use in automatic weighing of a vehicle provided with identification apparatus formed and arranged for storing information relating to its identity and characteristics and transmitting said information to suitable interrogation apparatus, said weighbridge having load cell means including load sensitive means whose electrical properties are variable as a predetermined function of the load carried by said load cell means, said load sensitive means being included in an electrical circuit means formed and arranged for providing, in use of the weighbridge, an output indicating the weight of a load on said weighbridge, wherein said weighbridge is provided with:: a vehicle sensing apparatus formed and arranged for sensing the approach of a said vehicle in use of the weighbridge, an interrogation apparatus formed and arranged for transmitting interrogation signals to said vehicle identification apparatus relating to the identity and characteristics of said vehicle, receiver apparatus formed and arranged for receiving information from said vehicle identification apparatus transmitted thereby, weigh bridge control means formed and arranged for carrying out weighing and weight recording operations with said weighbridge, and output means formed and arranged for providing an output containing information received from said vehicle identification apparatus and information relating to the weight of said vehicle.Preferably said vehicle sensing apparatus is formed and arranged for activating said interrogation apparatus and said weighbridge control means.
The present invention also extends to a weighbridge system comprising a weigh bridge of the invention and identification apparatus as defined hereinbefore and formed and arranged for mounting on a vehicle.
With a weighbridge of the present invention it is possible to carry out weighing operations on vehicle substantially automatically by simply passing a vehicle provided with the identification apparatus over the weightbridge without the need for any direct manual intervention between the driver or any other personnel and the weighbridge and obtain weight measurements properly associated with other necessary information relating to the identity of the vehicle and other relevant characteristics thereof.
Further preferred features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description given by way of example of one embodiment illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a schematic diagram (not to scale) of a weighbridge of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a weighbridge 1 comprising a load platform 2 supported on a plurality of spaced apart load cells 3. Each load cell 4 includes at least one electrical circuit component 5 formed and arranged so that an electrical property thereof varies with the weight carried by said load cell in accordance with a predetermined relationship.
The abovementioned components 5 are connected by suitable connectors 6 to a processing unit 7 formed and arranged for producing an output corresponding to the total weight carried by the load platform 2 and driving a suitable visual display unit 8.
Upstream of the load platform 2 is provided a vehicle sensing means 9 of known type e.g. a pressure operated switch, which is connected to the processing unit 7 for sending a signal thereto upon detection of a vehicle V approaching the load platform. The processing unit 7 is connected to an interrogation apparatus 10 downstream of the sensing means 9 for activation of the interrogation apparatus following detection of an approaching vehicle.
The interrogation apparatus 10 transmits in any suitable manner using electromagnetic radiation including visible, infra-red or radio waves or sound waves including ultra-sonic radiation, suitably modulated e.g. frequency or amplitude but preferably pulse code modulated, to an identification apparatus 11 mounted on the vehicle V, signals for activating the identification apparatus 11 to transmit information relating to the identity and characteristics of the vehicle.
Desirably the identification apparatus 11 includes both permanent and temporary memory means for holding permanent and temporarily valid information respectively. Permenent identification apparatus would conveniently include a unique serial number e.g. the vehicle registration number and details of the owner of the vehicle whilst permanent characteristics included might be the tare weight of the vehicle and its number of axles.
Temporarily held information which could for example be conveniently input at the point of loading might be details of the load and of the consignee.
The processing unit 7 also includes a weighbridge control means connected to the load cells 4 and the display unit 8 so as to initiate a weighing operation following sensing of the vehicle approach.
Finally the processing unit 7 is formed and arranged to complete the weight measurement information and the information received from the identification apparatus and display it via the dis piay unit 8 and/or produce a hard-copy print-out using suitable printer means and/or transmit the information to a remote central computer means.
In the case of a weighbridge used for weighing trains of vehicles e.g. railway goods wagons then desirably the processing unit 7 is formed and arranged for correlating the individual vehicle information and weight measurements and further processing so as to for example produce an output including information relating to the total train weight.
