Abstract
216,065. Maxim, H. P. Feb. 14. 1923. Exhaust-silencers.-In a silencer comprising a series of expansion chambers each provided with a restricted outlet in the zone of greatest expansion, the chambers B, C are formed between baffles 85 and annular partitions 86 arranged alternately in a casing 75, the baffles being shaped to form passages diverging in the direction of flow of the exhaust. As shown, the baffles are conical and have central projections 96, 97 to facilitate the flow of the exhaust, and the baffles and partitions are assembled by means of bolts 94 secured to the wall 77 at the outlet end of the casing. An expansion chamber A is provided at the inlet end, and the outlet from each of the chambers B, C is at least as great as the area of the inlet 80 to the casing. Apertures 98 in the baffles provide for drainage when the silencer is arranged vertically, and a coating of asbestos may be provided on the baffles and on the inner surface of the casing. In a modification, the chamber A is dispensed with, the baffles and partitions are bolted to the wall at the inlet end of the casing, and the end wall is omitted.
