Abstract
217,414. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Mathieson Alkali Works, Inc.). May 28, 1923. Amalgams, alkalis, and chlorine, obtaining.- Spent electrolyte from the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solution in cells having a mercury cathode, as in the Castuer process, is resaturated with raw salt containing soluble impurities such as compounds of iron and manganese, liable to affect the process adversely by causing decomposition of the amalgam. These are removed after settling the coarser impurities such as shale and gypsum, by allowing the solution to stand, say for an hour, during which they are precipitated by other constituents of the brine. The precipitation may be accelerated by the addition of small amounts of sodium hypochlorite or other reagents. The solution is then passed through a sand filter and returned to the cell. The temperature is maintained between 40‹ and 70‹ C. during electrolysis and regeneration.
