Abstract

This invention comprises an adjustable hinge for a gate which is secured to a gate post and comprises two hinge members 3, 6 which can be made to move relative to one another by sliding and rotational movement. The hinge members incorporate means such as a bolt 7 for preventing relative movement when the correct position of the hinge has been determined. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements In or Relating to Adjustable Hinges This invention relates to an adjustable hinge for use in the hanging of domestic and industrial gates.
The hanging of gates so that they open and shut correctly is an operation which requires accurate measurements and some skill. Even so difficulty can still be encountered in ensuring that the gates operate correctly because of the difficulty of fixing a pair of gate posts in the ground so that each post is exactly perpendicular and is in the correct position with regard to the other. To overcome the problem, the design of some gates has been modified to enable fine adjustments to be made to compensate for these defects. However these measures have proved to be only partially effective. Furthermore they have the disadvantage from the point of view of a manufacturer who employs mass production techniques of complicating the process of manufacture. The present invention provides an adjustable hinge the components ofwhich lend themselves to mass production and which enables fine adjustments to be made to the hanging of a gate without requiring any modification of the design of the gate. Furthermore the ease with which the hinge can be used enables gates to be hung correctly by people with only modest practical skills.
Accordingly this invention provides an adjustable hinge comprising means for securing the hinge to a gate post, a first member extending from the means, a second member incorporating a pivot pin for a gate the first member and the second member being connected together both slidably and rotatably and means to fix the pin in a predetermined position.
This invention is illustrated but not restricted by the following drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view taken in vertical section of the invention hinge and Figure 2 is a plan view of the hinge.
In these figures numeral lisa plate which is anchored to a gate post or other firm support by screws or bolts (2). A U shaped member (3) defining a slot (4) is made of steel and is welded onto the plate (1) and at right angles to it. A pivot pin (5) of 13mm diameter for the gate is welded to a metal strip (6) to the under side of which is secured a threaded stud (7) of 10mum diameter which passes between the arms of the U shaped member (3) through the aperture of a washer (8). The latter engages with the shoulders of the U shaped member.
A nut (9) is screwed onto the end of the threaded stud (7). For purposes of using the invention hinges a pair are mounted on a gate post vertically one above the other. Nut (9) on each hinge is loosened as a result of which the metal strip (6) bearing the pivot pin (5) is free to move backwards and forwards as shown in Figure 1 (Direction A) as the threaded stud (7) follows a similar path between the arms of the U shaped member. At the same time the strip is able to rotate in Direction B as shown in Figure 2.
The fact that pin (5) is able to have two freedoms of movement stems from the eccentric disposition of the pin with respect to stud (5). As a result the precise positions of the pin (5) can be varied readily.
The hinge eyes on the gate are slipped onto the pins of the hinge and by a process of trial and error the positions of the pins which ensure correct operation of the gate can be determined. At this stage the nut (9) on each hinge is tightened thus fixing the pin in its required position.
This invention can be varied in a number of different ways. For example the U shaped member can be replaced by strong brackets having a bolt hole in which case in order to permit the strip member (6) to slide it is provided with a slot, the shoulders of which will engage with the head of a bolt passing through the bolt hole.
The hinges of the present invention can be used with a wide range of gates and doors made for domestic or industrial purposes. However they are of special value when used in connection with certain extensible gates which are the subject of our co-pending patent application number . The gates are made by fixing together a number of panels each consisting essentially of upper and lower rails of tubular construction separated by filling members made preferably of metal strips or bars some of which can be bent into whirls or other decorative shapes. The panels are fixed together by the insertion of a metal peg into the end of the rail of one panel so that a part of the peg protrudes from the end of the rail. The protruding end is then pushed into the open end of a rail of an adjacent panel, thus forming a push fit connection. In this way by selection of the correct number and sizes of panels a gate can be built at least nearly to fit the space between two gate posts whilst any minor adjustments to the width or the gate can be made by means of the present hinges.
