Abstract
A high pressure nozzle assembly comprises a nozzle member (1) formed of wear-resistant material, e.g. ceramic, having a low transverse expansion coefficient. The nozzle has a cylindrical shank (2) positioned with clearance within a bore (3) in a nozzle holder (4). A collar (5) is formed at the delivery end of the nozzle (1), and the collar (5) has a tapered shoulder (10) engaging a sharp edge on the nozzle holder (4) and providing a fluid tight seal. The nozzle (1) is clamped and secured by means of a screw-threaded closure member (7) which is screwed to the nozzle holder (4) and which is formed with a bore (8) extending along the nozzle axis. The closure member may be an annular member (7) with an external screw-thread fitting into an internally screw-threaded part of the bore (6) of the nozzle holder (4, or it may be a cap nut, Figure 2 (not shown), screwed onto an external screw-thread on the nozzle holder (4). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION "A high pressure liquid spray nozzle"
This invention relates to a high-pressure liquid spray nozzle assembly.
High-pressure full-stream nozzles have been proposed with an outer periphery in the form of a hexagonal part merging on both sides into a cylindrical nozzle part. The longer of the two nozzle parts has a screw-threaded portion engaging in a corresponding bore in the nozzle holder to act as a liquid-tight closure. The other end of the nozzle projects beyond the nozzle holder or is disposed in a widened part of the bore. To reduce wear and increase the working life of the nozzle, the nozzle body is in two parts and has a cylindrical carbide insert having around it a nozzle jacket made of special steel.
It has also been proposed to make a nozzle of ceramic material to reduce nozzle wear and corrosion but a disadvantage found with corrosion-resistant and very hard-wearing materials of this kind is that they have low resilience and can withstand little, if any, transverse expansion. They therefore require a close fitting surrounding sheath - i.e., they must be enclosed in a close fitting support or carrier material; this reduces the overall radial load but because of the elaborate manufacture, greatly increases nozzle cost.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide an improved nozzle assembly for spraying highpressure liquid in which the radial loads acting on the nozzle can be reduced considerably and nozzle construction simplified and cheapened.
Broadly stated, the invention consists in a high pressure liquid spray nozzle assembly comprising a nozzle element formed of wear-resistant material having a low transverse expansion coefficient, the nozzle element having a substantially cylindrical shank located in the bore of a nozzle holder and having near its delivery end a collar with a tapered annular shoulder bearing on part of the nozzle holder to provide a seal for the end of the bore, there being substantial radial clearance between the shank of the nozzle element and the bore in the holder and in which the nozzle element is retained in the nozzle holder by means of a screwthreaded closure member which abuts the end face of the nozzle collar and is formed with a central passage.
In preferred nozzle constructions according to the invention the cylindrical shank of the nozzle is so positioned in the high-pressure liquid that the liquid acts on both the internal and external surfaces of the nozzle shank. Since the external generated surface is greater than the internal surface, the pressure loading acting externally on the cylindrical part predominates.
This compensates or counter-balances the outwardly directed forces which would otherwise appear in the wail material as undesirable tension. This also enables the nozzle to be made in one piece from a highly wear-resistant corrosion-proof brittle material unable to cope with high transverse expansions. The production of such a nozzle, for example, from ceramic or a similar material is therefore greatly simplified, so that the costs of nozzle production are also reduced without any reduction in nozzle life. By contrast the stresses experienced by nozzle in a one-sided loading design will become apparent when it is considered that high-pressure liquid may be used at pressures of from 1 0000 to 2 000 bar.
According to a preferred feature of the invention there is a radial drilling communicating with the enclosed space between the nozzle collar and the nozzle holder to allow any liquid which accumulates to discharge to relief, thus obviating any unwanted build-up of pressure in this space which might produce a force opposing the clamping of the nozzle.
The invention may be performed in various ways and two specific embodiments will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is an axial section through a nozzle according to the invention, and
Figure 2 is an axial section through another embodiment of the invention.
In the first example the cylindrical shank 2 of a nozzle 1 engages in a bore 3 of a nozzle holder 4 with considerable radial clearance. At the end of the bore 3 a collar 5 on the shank bears on the bottom end face of a widened portion 6 of the bore in the nozzle holder 4 (Figure 1) There is also considerable radial clearance between the collar 5 and the larger-diameter part 6, which has a screw-threaded portion in which is screwed an annular member 7. The member 7 bears on the end face of the collar 5 and retains the nozzle in position against the pressure of the issuing liquid. The high-pressure liquid stream leaving the nozzle 1 issues through a passage 8 at the centre of the member 7 and on the line of the axis of the nozzle bore 9.The passage 8 is a square or hexagonal in cross-section to be engaged by a hexagonal key or spanner or the like so as to force the annular member 7 tightly against the nozzle end face and to cause this to bear heavily against the sharp boundary edge of the nozzle-holder bore 3, by way of a conical shoulder 10 on the collar 5. The function of the boundary edge is to provide a fluid-tight seal at this end of the nozzle-holder bore 3, since the substantial radial clearance between the bore 3 and the shank 2 results in the pressure of the high-pressure liquid being operative in the immediate vicinity of the bevelled surface of the shoulder 10, and exerting a heavy radial load on the peripheral surface of the shank 2 in opposition to the force produced by the nozzle fluid pressure.
The only substantial difference between the nozzle arrangement of Figure 2 and the arrangement of Figure 1 lies in the construction of the screw-threaded closure, which in the Figure 2 construction takes the form of a cap nut 11. This engages around the cylindrical nozzle holder 4 which has the central bore 3 accommodating the nozzle shank 2 with a substantial radial clearance, and engages the collar 5 freely on its end face. The nozzle holder 4 is formed with an external screw-thread and the nut 11 has an internal surrounding screw-thread by which it is secured in place. The end face of the internal blind bore 12 of the nut engages the end face of the collar 5 and forces the conical surface 10 of its shoulder against the sharp edge of the end of the nozzle-holder bore 3. The nut 11 is formed with a central passage 13 coaxial with the nozzle bore 9. The space within the nut and above the holder 4 communicates with atmosphere by way of a radial drilling 14 in the nut 11 or holder, so that any leakage liquid entering this space can discharge to relief.
