Axial-flow type.-A steam turbine is so constructed that the steam leaves the stationary nozzles of the stages wherein at least 20 per cent of the total output of the turbine is developed with an absolute velocity of less than 900 ft, per second, while in the remaining stage or stages it leaves the stationary nozzles with an absolute velocity greater than 1800 or 1600 ft. per second, according to whether the latter stages are high or low pressure stages. In practice the change in the absolute velocity takes place comparatively rapidly at a particular part of the turbine. The first high-pressure stage 1 may be designed with a small heat drop and without regard to the efficiency range defined above, but in each of the remaining high-pressure stages 2 - - 14 the steam leaves the stationary nozzles with an absolute velocity of less than 900 ft. per second, while in each of the low-pressure stages 15 - - 22 it leaves the stationary nozzles with an absolute velocity greater than 1600 ft. per second.
