Abstract
Mounting means for fishing flies comprises a plurality of mounting members (8) each comprising an elongate slot or opening (10) into which the hook of a fly may be inserted. Each mounting member (8) comprises a slit pillar of resilient moulded plastics material, the slots (10) being of width slightly less than the gauge of wire from which the hooks of flies are commonly formed, so as to grip the hooks, and outer edges (12a, 12b) of the slots being flared to facilitate entry of the hooks. The mounting members lie in a uniform staggered array. The mounting members are provided on a base plate (6), which may be provided by or on a base of box, or which may be received loosely in a box, or which may be hingedly secured (14) to a box, for example so as to afford a lid. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements relating to fishing
Fishing, particularly when flies are used, involves a selection of a particular fly in accordance with a large number of variables, such as weather condition (fine weather or cloudy), river condition (slow or fast running), and the fish the angler is attempting to catch. To a large extent much of the skill involved is the selection of fly, and a serious angler will embark on a fishing trip equiped with a large number of flies of different size and colour, typically 50 to 100 for a sport angler, and more for a competition angler.
A number of different types of container are used for holding flies, including: (a) an otherwise empty tobacco tin. This suffers from the disadvantage that the flies become entangled, and difficulty is encountered in selecting a desired fly; (b) a box comprising a foam pad, into which the hooks of the flies may be inserted. This suffers from the disadvantage that when a fly is returned to the box, the foam retains water, and may cause the hook to rust; (c) a box having a magnetic base. This however does not prevent the flies from becoming jumbled and entangled; (d) a box having a large number of individual compartments. This is quite fiddley, and it is usually necessary to have several flies in each compartment.
Difficulty is particularly encountered in that, if a fly cannot easily be seen, an angler might not appreciate that a more appropriate fly exists in his possession than that which he may eventually select.
It is therefore one of the various objects of this invention to provide a means for containing flies which is convenient to use.
According to this invention there is provided a mounting means for flies comprising a plurality of mounting members, each providing a slot or opening into which the hook of a fly may be inserted.
The mounting means may be afforded by or on the base of a box or container, or by a mounting plate which may be positioned in a box, either loosely or secured thereto. If desired one or more such mounting plates may be hingedly mounted in a box, or hingedly mounted to walls to afford (e.g.) a lid of the box.
Each mounting member may be in the form of a pillar upstanding from a base member (which may be afforded by the base of a box) or by a base plate to be inserted in or hingedly secured to a box or part thereof, as aforesaid) into which pillar the slot or opening extends. Conveniently the pillars are of moulded plastics material selected to provide a resilience which enables the slot to be widened on the insertion of the hook therein, to be gripped therein by the resilience of the plastics material. Preferably the slot is flared at an outer edge thereof, to facilitate entry of the hook into the slot.
Conveniently the slots are elongate, and are of a width slightly less than the gauge of wire from which the hooks are commonly formed, so that on insertion of a portion of the hook into the slot (conveniently a curved portion between the barb and commencement of the tail) the resilience of the plastics material from which the mounting members are formed grips the hook to resiliently hold it in place, with the tail extending generally longitudinally of the slot.
Preferably the plurality of mounting members are staggered, to permit of a more convenient disposition of the flies over the mounting plate.
In this manner 50 to 100 flies or more may readily be accommodated on the mounting plate and displayed in a manner which affords a convenient and speedy identification of a desired fly, and its easy removal for use.
According to this invention there is also provided a box for containing fishing flies, the box being provided with a plurality of slots into each of which part of the hook of a fly may be inserted, the slots being afforded by opening in a formation moulded of a resilient material whereby when so inserted the hook is retained in position by the resilience of the material.
There will now be given a detailed description, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, of a mounting means which is a preferred embodiment of this invention, and which has been selected for the purposes of illustrating the invention by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the mounting means which is the preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side sectional view thereof;
Figures 3a, 3b and 3c are side, end and plan view of a mounting member of said mounting means; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing a fly located in the mounting member shown in Fig.
3.
The mounting means is the preferred embodiment of this invention is in the form of a mounting plate 6 from which a plurality, specifically 68, mounting members 8 extend in a uniformly-spaced array of 8 staggered columns. The mounting means is moulded from plastics material, specifically a K7 plastics material, although of course other appropriate materials may be utilised. Each mounting member is in the form of a slit pillar, comprising portions 8a, 8b, separated so as to provide an elongate slot 10, flared as at 12a, 12b at its outer edges, as seen in Fig. 3b.
The mounting plate is provided with a slot
14 for the provision of a hinge to enable the plate to be hingedly secured to a box, conve
niently a box moulded of a stiffer material than the K7 material selected for the pillars.
However if desired the mounting plate may be afforded by the base of a box, and/or the underside of a lid thereof.
In the use of the preferred embodiment, a central portion of a fly hook (typically in the range 0.35 to 0.7 mm) is inserted between the flared portions 12a and 12b of the slot of a selected pillar, and is pushed betwee the portions 8a and 8b, opening the slot slightly and being resiliently gripped therein, either with the barb uppermost, as is shown in Fig.
4, or iowermost. In this position the tail extends to a limited extent between a pair of pillars in the adjacent column (see Fig. 1).
Thus, by the use of the mounting means which is the preferred embodiment of this invention, a large number of flies may easily be carried around and displayed in a convenient manner, allowing an angler easily to replace a fly being used with an alternative fly.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, or a class or group of substances or compositions, as appropriate, may, separately or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
