Description

SPECIFICATION Books of matches The invention relates to books of matches.

According to the invention, there is provided a book of matches comprising a set of sideby-side matches interconnected at the bases thereof but individually removable and a cover including a lower front edge and a backing sheet which receive therebetween the bases of the matches and a front flap which folds over the side-by-side matches on the side thereof opposite the backing sheet to engage beneath the front edge, at least one surface of the cover carrying information concealed by a manually removable panel.

Preferably, the covered information is provided on an outer surface of the backing sheet.

The match book may have a match igniting strip on said backing sheet.

The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view from the back of a book of matches.

The book of matches comprises a set of matches 10 which are interconnected in sideby-side relationship at their bases 11, in conventional fashion. The matches 10 are contained inside a cover folded from a single piece of card to provide, in succession, a lower front edge 12, a backing sheet 13, a spine 14 and a front flap 15.

The lower front edge 12 and the backing sheet 13 form a channel in which the bases 11 of the matches 10 are received and secured, for example by a staple (not shown).

The spine 14 covers the heads of the matches 10, and the front flap 1 5 folds over the matches 10 on the opposite side of the matches 10 to the backing sheet 13.

The free edge 16 of the front flap 15 can engage beneath the front edge 12 to close the book of matches.

Any required information, shown here as a number, 17, is printed, by offset litho, for example, on the outer surface of the back sheet 13. This information 17 is concealed by a panel 18 of a material, such as latex, which can be removed manually, for example by a finger nail or an edge of a coin. The panel 18 may be applied by a silk screen printing technique. The information 17 can be information connected with the playing of a game. A match igniting strip 19 is provided along an outer lower edge of the backing sheet 13.

The information 17 and the panel 18 could be provided on any suitable internal or external surface of the cover. In addition, more than one such panel may be provided on the cover. It will be appreciated also that the cover need not be formed in one piece-it could be formed by a number of interconnected pieces.

The cover can be of any required diamensions and contain as many matches as required.

2. A book of matches according to claim 1 wherein the covered information is provided on an outer surface of the backing sheet.

3. A book of matches according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the manually removable panel is formed of a latex removable by a fingernail.

4. A book of matches substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.

According to the invention, there is provided a book of matches comprising a set of sideby-side matches interconnected at the bases thereof but individually removable and a cover including a lower front edge and a backing sheet which receive therebetween the bases of the matches and a front flap which folds over the side-by-side matches on the side thereof opposite the backing sheet to engage beneath the front edge, at least one surface of the cover carrying information concealed by a manually removable panel. Preferably, the covered information is provided on an outer surface of the backing sheet. The match book may have a match igniting strip on said backing sheet. The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view from the back of a book of matches.
