Abstract

The blood is withdrawn from the patient, then is passed continuously in sensory relationship past sensors (35, 35', 35'', 38) for the characteristics to be monitored, and then is returned to the patient's cardiovascular system, in a lossless one-way flow path. Blood withdrawal and return through catheters (21, 27) preferably indwelling in respective arterial and venous vessels (20A, 20B), as in a neonate's umbilicus (20), enable real-time monitoring of the selected characteristics. The intermediate blood-transport passage (25, 25', 25'') constitutes also a semi-permeable membrane juxtaposable to the sensors for use and readily disposable, as are the catheters, after use to assure positive isolation of the blood of separate patients. Gases, charge carriers, and radiation can pass through the membrane as indicators of the characteristics being monitored.
