Abstract
A gate 1 slides in an outer frame 2 to close a doorway or the like. A latch plate 16 engages on latch pins 7 to hold the gate against an outer frame member 4, as is known in the art. To securely lock the gate and allow access from either side a key operated lock 26, accessible from either side, moves a plate 27 into and out of engagement with an arm 21 on plate 16 to prevent or allow lifting of the plate 16 using exposed arm end 25, to unlatch the gate. In a preferred embodiment lock 26 also moves pins 29, 30 into apertures in the outer frame when locking the gate. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Gate with locking mechanism
The present invention relates to a gate with a locking mechanism, and in particular to a gate of the type which is slidable in an outer frame between an open position and a closed position where it may block a doorway, for example to a factory premises or a dwelling.
Typically such a gate comprises a rigid frame which is mounted on rollers in the outer frame and slidable to open or close an opening. In the closed position the gate frame is latched at one side to the outer frame. Means is provided for releasing the latch from inside or outside of the gate, and a bolt may also be provided to lock the latch in a closed position to prevent the gate being opened from the outside.
The present invention aims to provide a key operated mechanism for locking the latch in the closed position, which may thus be,acces- sible from inside and outside of the gate whilst maintaining security.
Another aim of the invention is to provide a key operated bolt for locking the gate in position.
The present invention provides a gate slidably mountable in an outer frame for movement between an open position and a closed position, the gate comprising a slidably mounted latch plate which will engage a latch pin mounted on the outer frame when the gate is in the closed position, wherein a key operated lock is provided for locking the latch plate in engagement with the latch pin, the lock being operable from the inside or the outside of the gate.
Preferably the latch plate has an arm connected thereto for manual movement of the plate out of engagement with the latch pin to allow the gate to be opened, and the lock comprises a pin which, in the locked position, bears on the arm to prevent movement thereof.
Very preferably the lock comprises a slide plate which moved on operation of the lock, the slide plate operating a pin which is engageable in an aperture in the outer frame to lock the gate in the closed position. In this way the operation of the lock reinforces security of closure of the gate, also it can be ensured that the lock will not operate until the gate is fully closed.
Preferably a lock operated pins are provided both in the vicinity of the latch plate and at an opposite side of the gate.
Other preferred features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying clams.
The invention will be further described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a partly cut away, part-sectional view of a locking mechanism of one embodiment of a gate according to the invention and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of another embodiment of a gate according to the invention.
A gate 1 slides in an outer frame 2 which is attached to a building, the gate being slidable between a closed position, to the right in
Fig. 1, to close a doorway into the building, and an open position, to the left in Fig. 1.
The outer frame is of generally square section horizontal members, 3, 5 and C-section upright members 4, and the gate slides in the frame on rollers 6, in a manner which is commonly known in the art.
A side member 4 (the other side member is to the left and is not seen in the drawing).
carries two latch pins 7, one or several of such pins may be provided.
The gate 1 comprises a rigid outer framework comprising horizontal square cross-sec- tion tubular members 8, 9 and upright square croSs-section tubular; members 10, only the right hand member is seen in the drawing, and diagonal square cross-section tubular members 33 filling the centre of the frame.
The right hand upright 10 is open at its top and bottom ends 11, 12 and has a pair of elongate apertures 13, 14 in a sidewall 15, for receiving the latch pins 7 into the member 10.
A flat latch plate 16, seen sideways on in the drawing, slides in the upright 10 and has a pair of elongate apertures 17, 18 which are arranged to slide over the latch pins 7 to engage the latch plate 18 behind the spike 19 of the latch pins 7, to hold the gate in the closed position.
Several guide plates 20 extend from the plate 17 to guide it in the upright 10. A manually operable pin 21 is attached to the plate 16 and extends through an elongate slot 22 in the upright 18. The pin 21 projects into a lock housing 23 formed in the gate and down through a horizontal member 24 where its end 25 is accessible from both sides of the gate.
In operation, as the gate is slid to the right in the drawing, the latch plate 16 wilt ride up over the spikes 19 of the latch pins as they enter the apertures 17, 18, locking the gate in the closed position. To release the gate the slide plate is lifted manually, by raising the exposed end 25 of pin 21, to a position where apertures 17, 18 are aligned with apertures 13, 14, allowing the gate to be withdrawn sideways from the latch pins 7.
Such a construction is well known in the art. It is also known to provide a manually slidable bolt which is accessible from the one side of the lock housing 23 and can be slid into a hole in plate 16 when the plate is engaged on the latch pins, locing it in position.
In accordance with the invention a key operated lock 26 is operable to move a locking plate 27 down against the pin 21. This will prevent upward movement of the latch plate 16 and so will lock the latch plate 16 in engagement with the latch pins 7, when the gate is in the closed position. The keyhole 28 of the lock is accessible from both sides of the lock housing 23, allowing the gate to be locked and unlocked from inside or outside the building.
The lock 26 also operates two additional locking pins 29, 30. Pins 29, 30 are attached to L-shaped plates 31, 32 which are moved apart or together by the operation of the lock 26. The pins 29, 30 are guided in apertures in the guide plate 20 of latch plate 16. Locking plate 27 is conveniently attached to plate 32, but may instead be replaced by a peg 27' supported from within and extended/retracted by the lock mechanism 26, as shown in Fig.
2. L-shaped, plates 31, 32 slidwan apertures 34, 35 in the upright 10.
The operation of such lock mechanism to move apart or together two plates simultaneously is well known and need not be described here.
As the lock is operated to lock pin 21 of plate 16, it also moves apart the plates 31, 32 and so pins 29, 30, which are arranged to engage in apertures provided in the upper and lower horizontal members 3, 5, thus providing an additional lock.
A similar arrangement of pins 29, 30 may be provided in the other upright of gate 1 (not shown) to lock the gate at both sides. A separate lock 28 is preferably provided; although the pins from each side may be coupled together.
Various modifications will be apparent to those in the art, for example only a single pin 30 may be provided, operating on one side of the lock 26, as shown in Fig. 2. It is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the accompanying claims.
