Abstract
An air filter for internal combustion engines has an annular layer of polyurethane foam 20 enclosing a conventional annular pleated paper filter medium (16) to diffuse the incoming air and act as a pre-filter before it reaches the fitter medium (16) thereby allowing a more even air flow through the filter medium (16) and increasing the life of the fitter. The layer (20) may be bonded to the end caps (10, 12) or removable for washing. <IMAGE>
Description
DESCRIPTION
"FILTER"
The present invention relates to air filters, and in particular, but not exclusively, to air filters for internal combustion engines.
One design of air filter for use in an internal combustion engine comprises, two flat, spaced apart annuli between which is secured a pleated strip of paper formed into a ring. The paper may either by fixedly secured to the annuli, in which case the whole filter is replaceable, or may be removably secured thereto, in which case only the paper element is replaceable.
It is important that the filter should be clean, in order to protect the engine, and it is usually necessary to replace the filter, or the paper element, as appropriate, every 12,000 miles (19,200km). It would obviously be financially beneficial if a filter with a longer life could be developed.
Also, air filters offer a resistance to the flow of air into the engine, resulting in loss of performance from the engine. Although an air filter is necessary, it would be advantageous if the air filter offered less resistance to the flow of air, thus resulting in improved engine performance and/or a saving in fuel.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, an air filter comprises an air inlet and an air outlet, a filter medium positioned between the inlet and the outlet, and a diffusing medium positioned between the inlet and the filter medium.
It has been found that this results in a filter having a longer life as compared with a filter without a diffusing material.
In one embodiment, the filter medium comprises a paper-type filter, and the diffusing medium comprises an expanded foam material, e.g. expanded inter-cellular polyurethane foam.
The filter medium and/or the diffusing medium may be fixedly, or releasably, secured in the air filter.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention, an air filter comprises two, generally flat, spaced-apart annuli, an annular paper-type filter medium positioned between the two spaced-apart annuli and an annular diffusing layer positioned radially outwardly of the filter medium.
In one embodiment, the diffusing layer and the filter medium are bonded coaxially to the annuli, to ensure that air passing through the filter passes through the diffusing layer and the filter medium.
The paper-type element is preferably pleated, or concertinaed, as in conventional air filters. The diffusing layer may comprise a foam, for example intercellular polyurethane foam.
By way of example only, a specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig, 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of an air filter in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through a portion of the air filter of Fig. 1.
The air filter illustrated comprises first and second, spaced-apart, flat plastics annuli 10,12. A cylindrically-shaped metal gauze 14 is bonded between the annuli 10,12 between their radially innermost edges, either by means of adhesive or by setting the gauze into the annuli during moulding of the annuli.
Also bonded between the annuli, radially outwardly from the gauze 14, is a conventional pleated or concertinaed paper-type filter element 16, arranged into a ring. The filter element 16 is made of resintreated fibrous paper and is pleated or concertinaed to offer a large surface area to the air passing through it. The filter element 16 is bonded during assembly to the two annuli 10,12, so that any air passing through the filter is forced to pass through the filter element 16.
A further cylindrically-shaped metal gauze 18 is bonded between the annuli, radially outwardly of the filter element 16. A length of expanded intercellular polyurethane foam 20 is wrapped around the gauze 18 into a cylindrical shape, and is sealed between the annuli 10,12, like the filter element, to ensure that any air passing through the filter passes through the foam 20. The free ends of the length of foam 20 are glued or heat sealed together at join 22.
The air filter of the present invention may be used in an identical matter to a conventional air filter, that is, it is secured in a conventional air filter holder. The engine extracts air through the centre of the filter, and air is therefore forced to pass firstly through the polyurethane foam 20 and secondly through the conventional paper filter element 16. The foam 20 filters the air and tends to trap coarse particles of solids which are present in the air, thereby allowing the paper filter element 16 to trap finer particles of solids only. This allows the paper filter element 16 to filter air for a longer time before it needs replacing, since the larger particles, which might otherwise clog the paper filter are removed by the foam 20.
The foam layer 20 also tends to diffuse the air before it reaches the paper filter element 16, thereby allowing the air to pass more evenly through the paper filter element 16, further increasing the useful life of the filter. It has also been found that the provision of a foam layer 20 results in a smaller pressure loss, thereby increasing the engine performance and saving fuel.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment. For example, although the paper filter medium 16 and the foam 20 are described as being bonded to the annuli 10,12, they may be releasably securable to the annuli, such that replacement of only the element 16 and/or the foam 20 would be necessary. Indeed, replacement of the foam 20 may not be necessary, since this can be washed, dried and replaced if desired. Also, although the embodiment includes two cylindrically shaped gauze members, 14,18, either or both of the gauze members may be dispensed with, if desired.
Claims (16)
1. An air filter comprising an air inlet and an air outlet, a filter medium positioned between the inlet and the outlet, and a diffusing medium positioned between the inlet and the filter medium.
2. An air filter as claimed in claim 1, wherein the diffusing medium comprises a reticulate material.
3. An air filter as claimed in claim 2, wherein the reticulate material comprises an expanded foam material.
4. An air filter as claimed in claim 3, wherein the expanded foam material comprises expanded intercellular polyurethane foam.
5. An air filter as claimed in claims 1 to 4, wherein the diffusing medium is fixedly secured to the air filter.
6. An air filter as claimed in claims 1 to 4, wherein the diffusing medium is releasably secured to the air filter.
7. An air filter as claimed in any of the preceding claims, comprising two generally flat spaced-apart annuli, an annular paper-type filter medium positioned between said spaced-apart annuli and an annular diffusing layer positioned radially outwardly of the filter medium.
8. An air filter as claimed in claim 7, wherein the diffusing layer and filter medium are bonded coaxially to the annuli.
9. An air filter as claimed in any of the preceding claims, further comprising a supporting structure.
10. An air filter as claimed in claim 9, wherein the supporting structure comprises a metal gauze.
11. An air filter as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the filter medium comprises a paper filter.
12. An air filter as claimed in claim 11, wherein the filter medium comprises resin treated fibrous paper.
13. An air filter as claimed in claim 11 or claim 12, wherein said paper is pleated or concertinaed to increase its surface area.
14. An air filter as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the free ends of the diffusing medium are heat sealed together.
15. An air filter as claimed in any of claims 1 to 13, wherein the free ends of the diffusing medium are glued together.
16. An air filter substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
