Abstract

A method of operating a washing machine comprises driving the laundry drum at a lower rotational speed in the rising phase than in the main washing phase. The rotational speeds in the rinsing phase and the main washing phase may be 40 and 50 to 55 r.p.m. respectively.

Description

METHOD OF OPERATING A WASHING MACHINE The present invention relates to a method of operating a washing machine.
In the operation of a drum washing machine with a laundry drum which is rotatably mounted at least approximately horizontally, the laundry is soaked with washing liquor during a main washing step and with rinsing liquor, as far as possible free from washing agent, during a subsequent rinsing step. Such a laundering process is generally usual in a washing machine with a laundry drum which is rotatably mounted at least approximately horizontally.
It would be desirable to improve the machine operation, however, by so improving the effectiveness of the rinsing step that altogether less water needs to be expended for the rinsing.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of operating a washing machine with a drum rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis, the method comprising the step of rotationally driving the drum at a first rotational speed for washing laundry in washing liquid in the drum in a main washing phase of the machine operation and subsequently at a second rotational speed for rinsing the washed laundry in rinsing liquid in the drum in a rinsing phase of the machine operation, the second speed being slower than the first speed.
It has been found that the rinsing effect can be improved if the laundry drum is driven at a lower rotational speed during the rinsing step than during the washing step. Thereby, a noteworthy part of the time expended and correspondingly a noteworthy part of the quantity of water consumed can be saved in the rinsing stages of the usual laundering processes.
With a drum rotational speed between 50 and 55 revolutions per minute for the main washing step, a drum rotational speed of about 40 revolutions per minute for the rinsing step has proved to be particularly advantageous.
The rinsing effect can be improved further at a rotational speed reduced in that manner that the laundry drum contains equipment which, during the rotation, raises rinsing liquor from the lower region of the liquor container and feeds it back to the laundry from above.
In a preferred example of the method, the drum of a washing machine is driven at about 50 to 55 revolutions per minute during a main washing step, when the laundry is soaked with washing liquid, and subsequently at about 40 revolutions per minute in a rinsing step when the laundry is rinsed in a rinsing liquor which, as far as possible, is free of washing agent. The ratio of the rotational speeds is thus about 4:5.

Claims (3)

1. A method of operating a washing machine with a drum rotatable about a substantially horizontal axis, the method comprising the step of rotationally driving the drum at a first rotational speed for washing laundry in washing liquid in the drum in a main washing phase of the machine operation and subsequently at a second rotational speed for rinsing the washed laundry in rinsing liquid in the drum in a rinsing phase of the machine operation, the second speed being slower than the first speed.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first speed is substantially 50 to 55 revolutions per minute and the second speed is substantially 40 revolutions per minute.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 and substantially as hereinbefore described.
