Abstract
Alkyl resorcinols, other than methyl, ethyl, n-propyl and n-butyl are produced by heating resorcinol and the appropriate fatty acid with a condensing agent such as zinc chloride, purifying the resulting acyl resorcinols and reducing them, for example by means of zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid. In examples, isobutyl, n- and iso-amyl, and n-hexyl resorcinols are produced, the intermediate acyl resorcinols being purified by vacuum distillation before reduction and the final alkyl resorcinols by vacuum distillation and re-crystallization. The products are non-toxic antiseptics or germicides. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the preparation in a similar way of n-propyl and n-butyl resorcinols and exemplifies the production of the n-propyl body. This additional subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
