Abstract

A cooking grill 1 is provided having a two section grill radiant 4, one section 5 corresponding approximately to one-third of the grill radiant 4 and the other section 6 corresponding approximately to two-thirds of the grill radiant 4. The one-third/ two-third subdivision can be either on the basis of the surface area of the grill radiant, or of the heat output of the grill radiant. The grill radiant can be a gas burner arrangement, or electrical heater elements. When the grill radiant is a gas burner arrangement, it can be an aerated burner or a surface combustion burner, and there may be gas flow control means for selectively supplying gas to section 5, section 6, or both. <IMAGE>

Description

Cooking Grills This invention relates to cooking grills, and is especially applicable to gas cooking grills.
The cooking grill may take any convenient form and may be an independent appliance or it may form part of a larger appliance e.g. a cooker or oven unit. The grill may be provided at "eye-level", "waist-level", or at any other convenient level and it may be provided in a chamber which is provided solely for grilling purposes or it may be provided in a chamber that can be used as a grill and, say, as an oven. Although especially applicable to gas cooking grills, the invention is also applicable to electric cooking grills.
It is known to provide a gas or electric cooking grill with a grill radiant which is divided into two substantially equal parts, one or both of which may be energised dependent upon a particular grilling requirement.
It has now been appreciated that dividing the grill radiant into two equal parts does not result in the most effective use of the grill radiant and it is an object of the present invention to provide a cooking grill with an improved form of grill radiant.
According to the present invention there is provided a cooking grill comprising a grill radiant which is divided into two separate sections, one section corresponding effectively to one-third of the grill radiant and the other section corresponding effectively to two-thirds of the grill radiant.
In carrying out the invention it may be arranged that the surface area of said one section corresponds substantially to one-third of the surface area of said grill radiant and that the surface area of said other section corresponds substantially to two-thirds of the surface area of said grill radiant.
However, because grill radiants of different size have different heating effects, it may also be arranged that the heat output from said one section corresponds substantially to one-third of the heat output of said grill radiant and that the heat output from the said other section corresponds substantially to two-thirds of the heat output of said grill radiant.
In a preferred arrangement for carrying out the invention, the grill radiant will take the form of a gas burner arrangement and gas flow control means may be provided for selectively supplying gas to said one section, said other section or both said sections of said grill radiant.
It is envisaged that the gas burner arrangement may take any convenient form such as a conventional aerated burner, or a surface combustion burner.
It is also envisaged that the grill radiant may comprise a plurality of electrical heater elements.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figs. 1 and 2 depict front and side views respectively of a gas cooking grill in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 3 is an underneath view of the grill of Figs. 1 and 2, depicting the grill radiant thereof.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing there is shown a gas cooking grill 1 which is mounted at "eye-level" on the vertical splash-back 2 (only part of which is shown) of a gas cooking appliance (not shown). The cooking grill 1 is provided on its undersurface 3 with a two section grill radiant 4, one section 5 of which corresponds effectively to approximately one-third of the grill radiant 4 and the other section 6 of which corresponds effectively to approximately two-thirds of the grill radiant 4. The grill radiants 5 and 6 are shown more clearly in the underneath view of Fig. 3.
It may be arranged that the surface area of the sections 5 and 6 of the grill radiant 4 correspond approximately to one-third and two-thirds respectively of the surface area of the grill radiant 4. However, because grill radiants of different size have disproportionately different heating effects, it may be arranged that the heat output from the sections 5 and 6 of the grill radiant 4 correspond approximately to one-third and two-thirds respectively of the heat output from the grill radiant 4. This may necessitate the section 6 of the grill radiant 4 being somewhat less than two-thirds of the surface area thereof.
It may be arranged that the supply of gas to the sections 5 and 6 of the grill radiant be selectively controlled whereby either section 5, or section 6, or both sections 5 and 6 may be operated, in dependence upon a particular grilling requirement. In this way, more effective use may be made of the grill radiant 4 than is the case where a conventional two section grill is provided, the two sections being equal.
The grill radiant 4 depicted in the drawing may take any convenient form, e.g. a conventional aerated burner, or a surface combustion burner.
Although in the embodiment described, the grill 1 is shown as including a gas grill radiant 4, it should be appreciated that a cooking grill in accordance with the present invention could also be provided using a plurality of electrical heater elements to form the sections 5 and 6 thereof.
