Abstract
A wound dressing (10) comprises a metallic foil (11) retained by a bandage (12). The bandage (12) may be surface coated with a bio-compatible adhesive (13) for adhering to the foil (11) and to a patient's skin or may be elasticated (Fig 2). Foil (11) is heat reflective and moisture impervious. <IMAGE>
Description
WOUND DRESSINGS
This invention relates to wound dressings.
According to the present invention there is provided a wound dressing comprising a heat reflective metallic foil associated with bandage means for retaining the foil in situ.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates a first form of wound dressing according to the present invention for application to a small surface area of the body; and
Fig. 2 illustrates a second form of wound dressing according to the present invention for application to a limb of the body.
As is shown in Fig. 1 a wound dressing 10 comprises a square of metallic foil 11 adhesively secured to a larger square of woven material 12 surface coated at 13 with a bio-#compatible adhesive to enable the material 12, which forms a bandage means, to adhere to a patient's skin. Metallic foil 11 is heat reflective and moisture impervious and, conveniently, is made of aluminium. It may be of any desired size and need not be square.
The wound dressing 20 shown in Fig. 2 comprises a strip of metallic foil 21 associated with a separable bandage means in the form of an elasticated net tube 22.
This embodiment is particularly useful for application to torso and extremities of the body around which the strip of foil 21 is wound rather than being applied as a pad (as in the Fig. 1 embodiment). Foil 21 is the same material as foil 11. The foil 21 may overlie a conventional wound dressing.
In another embodiment the metallic foil is in the form of a pad which is located to overlie a conventional wound dressing and is held in place by any convenient form of separable bandage means.
By virtue of the present invention open wound healing may be promoted as may physiotherapeutic healing due to localised heat retention and moisture retention.
Claims (7)
1. A wound dressing comprising a heat reflective metallic foil associated with bandage means for retaining the foil in situ.
2. A dressing as claimed in claim 1, wherein the foil is adhesively secured to the bandage means.
3. A dressing as claimed in claim 2, wherein the bandage means has a surface covering of bio-compatible adhesive, the foil being secured to part of said surface covering so that the remainder of said surface covering is securable to a patient's skin.
4. A dressing as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said foil is moisture impervious.
5. A dressing as claimed in claim 1, wherein said bandage means comprises an elasticated net tube.
6. A method of promoting wound healing comprising retaining moisture and heat in the locality of the wound by use of a heat reflective metallic foil.
7. A wound dressing as claimed in claim 1, and substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one of the embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
