Abstract
In a gas fire having an outer liner and an inner convector box member spaced by an air space from the outer liner with the inner convector box member containing a gas combustion arrangement and having a vent for gaseous products of combustion, a flue gather heat exchange member (50) is provided to extend within the air space from the vent of the inner convector box member to a duct (51) which extends outwardly through the outer liner and can be subjected to reduced pressure by a fan (53). The heat exchange member is provided with a lateral outlet leading to the duct (51) and is symmetrically formed so that by reversing the flue gather heat exchange member the outlet can extend optionally either to the right or to the left of the fire so that the gas fire can be arranged on a wall of a room which is not an exterior wall and the duct can extend along the wall on which the fire is provided to an exterior wall. <IMAGE>
Description
GAS FIRE INCORPORATING ITS OWN FLUE
The invention relates to a gas fire incorporating its own flue.
My co-pending application number 8521403 describes a gas fire comprising an outer liner member to be inserted into a fire cavity in a wall and an inner con vector box member to be spaced by an air space from the outer liner. The inner convector box member contains a gas combustion arrangement and has a vent for gaseous products of combustion and the vent bridges the air space between the inner convector box member and the outer liner and passes through the outer liner to a flue pipe.
If, however, it is not possible or convenient to provide a flue pipe, it may be possible to provide a fire with a fan assisted flue system which merely requires a screened vent on an outer wall of a building.
According to this invention a gas fire has an outer liner and an inner convector box member spaced by an air space from the outer liner with the inner convector box member containing a gas combustion arrangement and having a vent for gaseous products of combustion, wherein a flue gather heat exchange member is provided to extend within the air space from the vent of the inner convector box member to a duct which extends outwardly through the outer liner and can be subjected to reduced pressure by a fan, the heat exchange member being provided with a lateral outlet leading to the duct and being symmetrically formed such that by reversing the flue gather heat exchange member the outlet can extend optionally either to the right or to the left of the fire.
The gas fire can thus be arranged on a wall of a room which is not an exterior wall and the duct can extend along the wall on which the fire is provided to an exterior wall. This provides much greater flexibility of position of the fire within a room.
The flue gather heat exchange member provided in the air space between the inner convector box member and the outer liner member and having hot products of combustion passing therethrough, can be cooled by up currents of air passing both in front of and behind the flue gather heat exchange member thereby to provide convection heating from the fire in addition to the radiant heat thereof and also advantageously cooling the products of combustion passing through the flue gather heat exchange member to the duct so that they will be relatively cool by the time they reach the fan.
The invention is diagrammatically illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is the first figure of the drawings of my co-pending application 8521403; and
Figure 2 is a partially cut-away fragmentary perspective view showing a gas fire according to this invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 shows a gas fire 1 comprising an outer liner member 2 and an inner convector box member 3. The outer liner member has a base plate 4, back plate 5, sloping back plate 6 and side walls 7 and 8 with a roof plate 9. The inner convector box member has a base plate 16 supported on support members 17, a back plate 18 and side walls 20 and 21. It also has a roof plate 22 a downwardly sloping roof plate 25 and a tubular trunking 29 which extends in use through an aperture in the sloping back plate 6 of the outer liner member 1.
Referring to Figure 2 a gas fire according to the invention is formed in very similar manner to the gas fire of Figure 1, but the tubular trunking 19 engages in the upper end of a flue gather heat exchange member 50 forming a vertical duct into which products of combustion are fed at the upper end and having a laterally extending outlet at its lower end onto which a length of trunking 51 can be fitted. The trunking can extend for some considerable distance or as shown can almost immediately make an outward turn through an exterior cavity wall 52 to feed into an extractor fan 53 which has an outlet within a cage 54 on the outside of the wall. In Figure 2 the flow of combustion products is indicated by arrows with tail feathers and the flow of air both in front of and behind the flue gather heat exchange member 50 and out through an upper convection vent 55 is indicated by arrows without tail feathers.
Claims (4)

2. A gas fire according to claim 1, arranged on a wall of a room which is not an exterior wall with the duct extending along the wall on which the fire is provided to an exterior wall.
3. A gas fire according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the flue gather heat exchange member is provided in the air space between the inner convector box member and the outer liner member and, in operation, having hot products of combustion passing therethrough, is cooled by up currents of air passing both in front of and behind the flue gather heat exchange member thereby to provide convection heating from the fire in addition to the radiant heat thereof and also cooling the products of combustion passing downwardly through the flue gather heat exchange member to the duct so that they are relatively cool by the time they reach the fan.
4. A gas fire substantially as hereinbefore described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
