Abstract

When turning the sausages there is a danger of joggling adjacent ones and, frequently, displacing one which has already been turned. With a grill, in particular there is an even more delicate moment. In order to turn sausages being grilled, they are usually withdrawn from under the grill to protect the cook's hands from the heat. The grill pan must be replaced very gently if the sausages are not to roll over on their way back. In order to alleviate these problems, there is disclosed a grid for a grill or barbecue formed with V-shaped depressions to receive a sausage or sausages in use. The grill may be of sheet or wire material. <IMAGE>

Description

GRID FOR A GRILL OR BARBECUE Field of the Invention This invention relates to a grid for a grill or abarbecue.
Background of the Invention One of the more irritating problems facing a hurried cook is that of keeping sausages on the grid of a grill or barbecue. Sausages by their nature are round in cross section and so are prone to roll when disturbed even by the stress of cooking.
Summary of the Invention The invention is intended to alleviate these problems.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a grid for a grill or barbecue formed with V-shaped depressions to receive a sausage or sausages in use.
In one form of the invention, the grid has a plurality of parallel wires for supporting food to be grilled or barbecued, said wires being bent in a plurality of "V"s out of the general plane of the grid, the "V"s of adjacent wires being. aligned to provide the depressions.
In another form of the invention, the grid is formed in.
a sheet material, with at least one hole in the bottom of each depression for drainage.
Each sausage to be cooked is placed in a depression.
The sausages are then much more stable and resist disturbance much more robustly, even when slippery from fat released in the cooking. For the grill, in particular, the pan can be replaced much more quickly and abruptly without rolling the sausages over.
Brief Description of the DrawinR On embodiment of the invention, given by way of example, will now be described with reference to the single figure which is a perspective view of a grid embodying the invention.
Detailed Description Traditionally the grid used to support food for grilling or barbecueing is a matrix, literally a grid, of crossed wires. Although, as will be explained, the invention can be embodied in this form of grid, the embodiment shown in the drawings is similar to a more recent form, being made in a sheet material, for example stove enamelled sheet steel.
Referring to the drawing, the grid 2 is generally rectangular, being bent over at two opposite ends to form supports or legs 4 on which the grid stands. The top of a conventional grid could be formed with small protuberances to assist fat to drain from the food being cooked. In addition, or alternatively, the present grid is formed with a series of parallel V-shaped depressions suitable to receive a sausage to be cooked. For best effect the angle at the apex 8 of each "V" is approximately a right angle, and the width of the depression is about 2.5cm.
Sausages laid in the depressions, end to end if necessary, are much more stable than on a conventional grid.
Turning the sausages without disturbing those already turned is easy. The grill pan can be returned under the grill relatively briskly without any great danger of the sausages rolling over.
To prevent the sausages from "swimming" in the fat which is released during cooking, a series of holes 10 is provided in the bottom of each depression, allowing the fat to drain into the grill pan.
Although the form illustrated is entirely suited to use with an overhead grill, it would be less suitable for use with a barbecue. To suit this -use, and also to be equally suitable for use with an overhead grill, the invention may be embodied in a wire grid. In this form, not shown, the grid is formed by a matrix of intersecting wires welded together. Parallel wires running in one direction in the matrix, are bent out of the general plane of the grid in a plurality of "V"s. Each such wire could be pictured as looking like the edge of the sheet in the drawing. The wires are so placed that the "V"s of adjacent wires align to provide the depressions.
Whether the grid is in the sheet or in the wire form, it is not limited to the cooking of sausages. Other food, bacon, chops or whatever, can be laid on the grid for cooking. One grid which embodies the invention will thus do for all food to be grilled. and provides much greater convenience in the cooking of sausages without disadvantage for cooking other food.

Claims (5)

1. A grid for a grill or barbecue formed with Vshaped depressions to receive a sausage or sausages in use.
2. A grid as claimed in claim 1, having a plurality of parallel wires for supporting food to be grilled or barbecued, said wires being bent in a plurality oF "V"s out of the general plane of the grid, the "V"s of adjacent wires being aligned to provide the depressions.
3. A grid as claimed in claim 1, formed in a sheet material, with at least one hole in the bottom of each depression for drainage.
4. A grid as claimed in any preceeding claim, wherein the angle at the apex of the "V" is approximately a right angle, and wherein the depression are about 2.5 cm wide at its top.
5. A grid substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
