Abstract
A load bearing roller assembly for slidably supporting a door or window on a track comprises a housing 1 for mounting on the underside of the door or window provided with an annular groove 7 containing a plurality of cylindrical rollers 8 enclosed by an endless loop 9 of flexible material for engagement with the track or rail received in an elongate slot opening into a linear part of the groove 7. The loop 9 is adapted to locate the assembly on the track or rail by a complementary groove in the outer surface. The groove may be pre-formed or may be formed in use by controlled deformation of the material from which the loop 9 is made. In the latter case, controlled deformation may be assisted by the provision of an annular witness mark 12 in the outer surface of the loop 9. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO LOAD BEARING ROLLER
ASSEMBLIES
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to load bearing roller assemblies for supporting a member on a track or rail to permit sliding movement of the member relative to the track or rail. The invention has particular, but not exclusive, application to load bearing roller assemblies for supporting sliding doors or windows on a fixed track or rail.
According to the present invention we provide a load bearing roller assembly for supporting a member on a track or rail to permit sliding movement of the member relative to the track or rail, the roller assembly comprising a housing adapted for mounting on the member, a plurality of generally cylindrical bodies arranged in a continuous annular path in the housing for rolling movement along and around the path, a band of flexible material surrounding the bodies within the path, and an elongate slot in the housing opening into a substantially linear part of the path in which the track or rail is received for engagement with the band.
By the present invention, a band of flexible material is interposed between the roller bodies and the track or rail on which the assembly is mounted. As a result, the noise generated by the circulating movement of the roller bodies around the path during sliding movement of the member on the track or rail is reduced.
The band may have a pre-formed annular groove on the outer surface which is complementary to the profile of the track or rail to locale accurately the assembly on the track or rail and prevent sideways movement of the assembly.
Alternatively, the band may be made of a material which in use, deforms to provide a locating groove in the outer surface complementary to the profile of the track or rail to locate accurately the assembly on the track or rail and prevent sideways movement of the assembly. A suitable material having the desired deformability characteristic for the band is nylon but other materials may be equally suitable.
Where the band is made of deformable material, an annular witness mark, for example a narrow annular cut, is preferably provided in the outer surface of the band to assist initial- location of the assembly on the track or rail and to increase the initial friction between the band and the track or rail.
The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single Figure is an exploded isometric view of a roller assembly according to the present invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, a housing 1 of a roller assembly according to the present invention for supporting a member (not shown) such as a door or window on a track or rail (not shown) to permit sliding movement of the member relative to the track or rail comprises a main body 2 and an end cap 3 which are assembled together by locating cylindrical bosses 4 on the end cap 3 in aligned holes 5 in the main body 2 into which screws (not shown) or like releasable fasteners are inserted to engage respective threaded bores 6 in the bosses 4.
The main body 2 and end cap 3 are each moulded from acetal but other suitable plastics materials may be used. Alternatively the housing~parts 2,3 may be cast from metal or alloy, for example zinc die castings.
The main body 2 is formed with an annular groove 7 which is closed by the end cap 3 *o define a continuous annular path in which a plurality of rollers 8 comprising right cylindrical bodies are received for rolling movement along and around the path. The rollers 8 are which are formed by parting off from an extrusion of the appropriate cross-section are made of acetal but other plastics materials may be used.
Also received within the path is a band comprising an endless flexible loop 9 of nylon which surrounds the rollers 8. The loop 9 may be formed n one piece by injection moulding or by parting off from a tubular extrusion. Alternatively the loop 9 may be formed by a strip cut to length from an extrusion and the ends joined together by welding.
The groove 7 is partially cut-away on one side to leave a narrow rib 10 which defines with a similar narrow rib 11 on the end cap 3 an elongate slot opening into a linear part of the path in the underside of the housing 1 in which the track or rail is received for engagement with the loop 9.
The loop 9 is provided on the outer surface with a witness mark 12 in the form of a marrow annular cut to provide initial location of the roller assembly on the track or rail and to increase the initial friction between the loop 9 and the tractror*rail.
In use, the nylon loop 9 dorms in the region of the witness mark to form an annular locating groove complementary to the profile of the track or rail thereby accurately locating the assembly on the track or rail against sideways movement. In this way, the assembly is automatically self-locating on the track or rail through the controlled deformation of the loop 9 thereby enabling a common assembly to be used with a range of different track or rail profiles.
The housing is adapted to be pivotally mounted on the underside of the member, i.e. the door or window, by mounting means (not shown) secured to the member and engaging aligned openings 13,14 in the housing parts 2,3 respectively. In this way, the assembly is self-aligning on the track or rail to maintain the engagement between the loop 9 and the track or rail so as to ensure that the load and pressure is spread between a number of the rollers 8 at any time.
A suitable construction of mounting means for pivotally mounting the housing on the member is disclosed in our co-pending UK Patent Application
No.86.27948 and briefly comprises a carrier having a support body adapted to be secured to the underside of the member, a support arm on which the housing is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis transverse to the direction of the length of the track or rail and adjustment means for moving the arm relative to the body for adjusting the housing relative to the body.
Such mounting means in addition to providing the selfalignment of the assembly as above-described additionally enables the vertical height of the assembly to be adjusted to correct any non-alignment of the member.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment above-described. For example the two parts of the housing may be of any suitable shape which on assembly define a continuous annular path for the rollers and the band, and an elongate slot opening into a linear part of the path for reception of the track or rail.
The housing may be adapted for mounting on the member by any suitable means permitting pivotal movement of the assembly and/or height adjustment of the assembly. Alternatively, the mounting means may be such that both pivotal movement and height adjustment of the assembly is precluded.
The band may be made from any material with or without a witness mark which, in use, deforms to provide a locating groove complementary to the track or rail as above-described. Alternatively, the band may be made from a material which does not deform in use and in this case a locating groove complementary to the track or rail profile may be pre-formed in the band.
It will be appreciated that the band is confined in the annular path so that whilst it is preferred for the band to comprise an endless loop as above-described this may not be essential and an open ended loop formed, for example, by cutting a strip of the required length from an extrusion may also be effective.
Other advantages of the invented assembly resulting from the use of a band of flexible material surrounding the rollers are that assembly is facilitated by providing a positive location for the rollers in the groove prior to attaching the end cap and the noise generated in use by movement of the rollers around the path is reduced.
