Abstract
220,146. Thomas, J. G. P., and Thomas Inventions Development Co., Ltd. July 18, 1923. Radius and torque rods.-The springing of a road vehicle is effected by several torsion members connected to the vehicle frame and to arms pivoted on the axles, the arrangement being such that torque is exerted on the torsion members when relative vertical movement occurs between the frame and axles but rotation of the axles is prevented. As shown in Fig. VII, two arms 2, 3 arranged adjacent each wheel are connected by spherical bearings 11 to a bracket 10 secured on the axle 12. The arm 3 is secured on the outer end of a torsion member 4, Fig. II, which extends to within a short distance of the centre of the chassis where it is splined to a torsion tube 5 secured by a flange 7 to the frame 1, a bearing 8 being interposed between the outer ends of the members 4 and tube 5. The arm 2 may be secured to a similar torsion device, but, as shown in Fig. III., the arms 2 at opposite sides of the frame are connected to an anti-rolling rod 13 supported in bearings 15 on the frame. The centres A - - D are located at the corners of a parallelogram, and the arms 2, 2 may lie in the same vertical plane.
