Abstract

A display book is made by welding a plurality of filing sleeves 10 of transparent plastics material together along one edge thereof to form a welded spine 26, and crimping an extruded plastics strip 32 of C-shaped cross-section onto the filing sleeves so as to embrace the welded spine and press on the outer sleeves in the region adjacent the welded spine. The strip may include formations (40, Fig. 5) for holding a label. <IMAGE>

Description

Display book and method of making it.
THIS INVENTION relates to a display book and to a method of making such a book.
Display books are known, and comprise a plurality of filing sleeves of transparent plastics material which are welded together along one edge thereof to form a welded spine.
In existing books of this nature, the weld at the spine is concealed by a strip of adhesive tape which extends around the weld and is adhered to the outermost sleeves. The tape itself does not contribute to the strength of the spine.
Problems with the existing construction are that the plastics material in the region immediately adjacent the weld tends to crinkle or pucker as an inevitable result of the welding process, and that the sleeves tend to fan out from the weld in this region, instead of laying flat. The heavier the weld or the greater the number of sleeves in the book, the more pronounced do these problems become. This detracts from the appearance of the book and makes it necessary to compromise on strength.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a display book which does not suffer as much from these problems, yet is strong and has a much neater appearance.
According to the invention there is provided a display book which comprises a plurality of filing sleeves of transparent plastics material which are welded together along one edge thereof to form a welded spine, there being a strip of C-shaped cross-section which embraces the welded spine and presses on the outer sleeves in the region adjacent the welded spine.
Plastics material of the welded spine may form a laterally protruding bead along each side of the welded spine.
The strip may be of an extruded material.
The extruded material may be a plastics material.
Further according to the invention there is provided a method of making a display book, which method comprises welding a plurality of filing sleeves of transparent plastics material together along one edge thereof to form a welded spine, and applying a strip of C-shaped cross-section to the filing sleeves so as to embrace the welded spine and press on the outer sleeves in the region adjacent the welded spine.
Said strip may be applied by crimping it onto the filing sleeves The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 illustrates the process of welding a number of sleeves together to form a display book in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on line II-II in Figure 1; Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the fitting of an extruded strip onto the welded spine; and Figure 5 illustrates an alternative form of extruded strip that can be used.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, reference numeral 10 indicates a filing sleeve which has a folded side 12, a welded side 14, an open side 16, and, initially, an open side 18. The sleeve is of a transparent plastics material. A number of such sleeves are held in a clamp (not shown) and heated along the open sides 18, sufficiently to melt the plastics material, This welds the sleeves together to form a welded spine 26. A relatively heavy weld 26 is produced, with laterally protruding beads 30 of welded material. As a consequence, the welded connection between the sleeves 10 is relatively strong.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, a strip 32 of extruded plastics material is now fitted onto the welded spine. The strip initially has a C-shaped cross section as illustrated in Figure 4. Prior to fitting, the strip is heated and opened up somewhat, so that it takes up the shape as illustrated in Figure 3. The spacing between lips 34 of the strip is now sufficient to clear the beads 30. The strip 32 is pressed onto the welded spine in the direction of arrow B and is then crimped onto the spine by means of a pair of suitably shaped jaws 36 which close onto one another in the direction of arrows C. The strip 32 now embraces the welded spine 26, and the lips 34 of the strip press onto the outer sleeves 10 in the region adjacent the spine.
After the crimping operation, the jaws 36 are opened again and the completed display book ejected.
It will be seen that the strip 32 forms a form-locking engagement with the welded spine 26, so that it will be difficult for the strip to be pulled off in the direction opposite to the direction of arrow B. In addition, the lips 34 will press out any crinkles that may otherwise form as a result of the heavy welding and will prevent the filing sleeves from fanning out from the welded spine 26.
In use, flexing of the filing sleeves when opening and closing the display book and turning the pages will take place not at the welded spine itself but slightly away from it.
Another advantage of the strip 32 is that it can be used as a grip for suspenders to suspend the display book.
Referring now to Figure 5, there is shown a strip 38 which is similar to the strip 32, except that it has formations 40 for holding a label or the like.
