Abstract
A vehicle trim eg headliner 12 is described which includes a protective layer 25 applied to the surface of the trim 21 which will be exposed when the trim is fitted. The protective layer 25 has a marginal portion with adhesive applied which marginal portion is separated from the remainder of the protective layer by a perforated tear strip 29. The marginal portion is applied around an edge of the trim which will be covered by a trim finisher 13 when the trim is fitted, the perforated tear strip being disposed such that it will be aligned with or just overlaid by a lip of the trim finisher. <IMAGE>
Description
TRIMS
The present invention relates to trims and in particular to trims such as headliners, carpets, rear package trays and other soft trim installations for the interiors of vehicles.
The exposed edges of moulded headliners fitted to vehicles, for example edges exposed around the door openings, are overlaid by cosmetic lips which form part of the flange finisher applied around the door opening. Due to excessive handling and'the use of lubricants to facilitate easier assembly of the flange finisher there is an unacceptably high reject and scrap rate of soiled or dirty headliners. This problem has been mitigated to some extent by the use of an adhesive protective film which is applied to the textile surface of the headliner to protect it. Nevertheless, when fitting the headliner, it is necessary to remove the protective film from the area adjacent to the door opening flange, before fitting the flange finisher, thereby exposing this particularly vulnerable area during the flange finisher fitting operation.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a trim includes a protective layer applied to the surface of the trim which will be exposed when the trim is fitted, the protective layer having a marginal portion with adhesive applied thereto, said marginal portion being separated from the remainder of the protective layer by a perforated tear strip, said marginal portion being applied around an edge of the trim which will be covered by a trim finisher when the trim is fitted, the perforated tear strip being disposed such that it will be aligned with or just overlaid by a lip of the trim finisher.
The protective layer of the trim described above is left in place until the trim finisher has been applied, so that protection is retained during this operation and lubricants can be used without risk of soiling the trim.
Once the trim and trim finishers have been fitted, and excess lubricant removed, the protective layer may be removed by tearing along the perforated strip, thus exposing the decorative surface of the trim.
According to a further aspect of the present invention a method of fitting a trim comprises; applying a protective layer to the surface of the trim which will be exposed when the trim is fitted, said protective layer including a marginal portion which is adhered to the rear and side edge of the trim, the marginal portion being separated from the remainder of the protective layer by a perforated tear strip; locating the trim in position; fitting a trim finisher around the edge of the trim to cover exposed edges of the trim, the edge of said trim finisher being aligned with or just overlying the perforated strip; and removing the protective layer from the exposed surface of the trim by tearing along the perforated strip, after the trim finisher has been fitted.
The protective layer may cover the whole of the decorative surface of the trim or may be applied only to selected areas, for example areas along the edges of the trim which are susceptible to soiling during fitting. The protective layer may be secured to the decorative surface of the trim by a pressure sensitive non-setting adhesive which may be applied over the whole surface of the protective layer or to one or more selected areas.
An embodiment of the invention is now described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a part sectional isometric view of a
vehicle roof with moulded headliner fitted; and .i' 2 shows a plan view of a protective film which is applied to the headliner illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a partial section through a typical vehicle roof 10 adjacent a door opening defined by flange 11. A moulded headliner 12 is secured to the roof 10 by suitable fastenings or adhesive. A flange finisher 13 is clipped to the flange 11 surrounding the door opening. The portion of the flange finisher 13 along the upper edge of the door opening has a cosmetic lip 14 which overlies the exposed edge 15 of the headliner 12.
The headliner 12 is formed from rigid foam plastics material 20 and has a textile cover 21 on the surface thereof which will be exposed, when the headliner 12 is fitted. The headliner 12 is moulded to conform generally with the contour of the roof 10, having convex and concave curves 21 and 22 which run longitudinally fore and aft of the vehicle. A protective film 25 is applied longitudinally of the headliner 12 along the sides thereof which are handled extensively during the fitting operation. The protective film 25 may, for example, be made of a plastics material such as polythene or paper treated with an impervious coating.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the protective film 25 has a pressure sensitive adhesive applied to three strips 26, 27 and 28 thereof. The marginal strip 26 is separated from the remainder of the protective film 25 by a perforated tear strip 29.
The protective film 25 is applied to the headliner 12 either before it is moulded or immediately after moulding.
The marginal strip 26 of the protective layer 25 is attached to the rear face of the headliner 12 and extends around the longitudinal edge 15, so that the perforated tear strip 29 will just be overlaid by the cosmetic lip 14 when the flange finisher 13 is fitted. The protective film 25 is stuck to the textile cover 21 by the adhesive strips 27 and 28, strip 27 engaging the surface of the headliner 12 between the convex and concave curves 21 and 22 to ensure that the protective film 25 conforms closely with the surface of the headliner 12.
The headliner 12 is fitted to the roof 10 and the flange finisher 13 is fitted so that the cosmetic lip 14 covers the edge 15 of the headliner 12, with the protective film 25 in place. The portion of the protective film 25 stuck to the textile cover 21 may then be removed by tearing along the perforated strip 29.
The adhesive used on the strips 26 and 27 should be a nonsetting pressure sensitive adhesive which may be peeled off the textile cover 21 of the headliner without damage thereto and without marking the headliner.
