Abstract
485,877. Discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and ALDINGTON, J. N. Dec. 8, 1936, No. 33675. [Class 39 (i)] The light from mercury or other metal vapour discharge lamps is modified by surrounding the arc, wholly or in part, by a sleeve of highly refractory material which becomes incandescent in use. Where the nature of the material does not provide sufficient translucency, the tube may be made in two parts each surrounding the arc near an electrode leaving the central part of the arc free, or it may be provided with a longitudinal slit or a number of slits in line for the unrestricted emission of light. The tube may be formed of magnesia, alumina, or rare earth oxides such as zirconia or yttria. Other materials providing selective radiation such as thoria with a small amount of ceria may be applied to the outside of the tube. As shown in the Figure, a lamp with a quartz envelope 1 and thermionic electrodes 2, is provided with a sleeve 4 enclosing the arc and sufficiently close thereto to become incandescent in operation.
