Abstract

Refractory metal parts of devices having sealed envelopes, such as vacuum tubes, are united by means of a solder consisting of a brittle alloy containing at least 40 per cent of one or more metals of the iron group, the other constituent being selected from the following: molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, iron group phosphides and arsenides, silicon, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, and boron, and the proportions of the constituents being such as to give the lowest melting point. In use the solders are preferably powdered, and made into a paste with a volatile liquid such as alcohol or paraffin. Particular examples consist of (1) 51 per cent of nickel and 49 per cent of molybdenum; (2) 56 per cent of nickel, 33 per cent of iron, and 11 per cent of phosphorus. Specifications 330,403, [Class 83 (iv)], and 436,401 are referred to.
