Abstract
A gas-containing copper melt from electrolytic or refined copper which has had the gas-content reduced or eliminated by the addition of a deoxidant, the original conductivity of the melt thus being impaired, has its original conductivity restored by substantially removing the excess of the deoxidant used by the addition of a slagging agent or by treatment with an oxidant (oxygen in pure or combined form, air or air enriched with oxygen), without impairing the conductivity. Quicklime, with or without flux such as fluorspar, may be used as the slagging agent, and molten copper with an oxygen content, obtained from a prior stage in the melt, or solid oxygen-containing copper may be used as the oxidizing agent. The process can be effected in a preliminary and a final stage and may be carried out in the casting ladle or in a cascade funnel, one of the latter being described and illustrated.
