Abstract
Enteric compositions are prepared by forming an intimate mixture of a therapeutic agent solid at ordinary temperatures and an enteric material consisting of a dicarboxylic acid ester of either cellulose, cellulose derivative, polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate (i) in the presence of a liquid solvent for the enteric material, or (ii) at an elevated temperature in the presence of a compound solid at ordinary temperature, but both liquid and a solvent for the enteric material at said elevated temperature, or (iii) at an elevated temperature, the therapeutic agent itself being both liquid and a solvent for the enteric material at said elevated temperature, and thereafter, in each case, solidifying the mixture to form pills, &c. Preferred enteric materials are cellulose phthalate and acetate phthalate, ethyl cellulose phthalate, polyvinyl phthalate and acetate phthalate, either in acid form or as water-soluble salts. Therapeutic agents exemplified are barium sulphate (X-ray opaquing agent), yeast, egg albumin, starch, zein, sodium and potassium chlorides, magnesium and ferrous sulphates, sulphanilamide, p phenobarbital, thyroid, pancreatin, bile salts, ovarian substances, digitalis, gentian violet, aspirin, mandelic acid, phenacetin. Water or organic solvents may be used in process (i) above. In process (iii), aspirin is an example of a therapeutic agent liquid at an elevated temperature.
