Abstract

Synthetic linear polymer filaments are drawn while in contact with a heated snubbing pin having a diameter of at least 3 inches. The surface of the pin may be nitrided or of sandblasted chrome. Polyethylene terephthalate filaments may be drawn whilst in contact with a snubbing pin, the surface temperature of which is above 75 DEG but below 120 DEG C. Heat may be generated by the passage of the filaments over the pin, no extra heat being supplied to the pin. The filaments may be heated before reaching or after leaving the pin, e.g. by passage over a hot plate. More than one snubbing pin may be used in series, each having a diameter of at least 3 inches, the pins being closely spaced and preferably in a line, so that the filaments pass in a sinuous path over each pin with a contact angle of about 180 degrees. The temperature of additional pins is kept at least 5 DEG C. lower than that of the pin on which drawing takes place. In the methods which utilize one snubbing pin the filaments may be preheated by immersing the pin in a liquid, the temperature of which is at or near that of the snubbing surface. The liquid should be non-corrosive and a non-solvent for the filaments, e.g. water. To minimize heat losses from the large heated snubbing surface it may be made narrow or lagged on those parts not in contact with the filaments. Examples are given in which polyethylene terephthalate filaments from spinnerettes and yarns from bobbins are drawn in contact with snubbing pins of large diameter.
