Abstract

A pharmaceutical composition for healing wounds of the body surface, in dosage unit form comprises glucosamine and/or one or more derivatives of glucosamine and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Specified derivatives of glucosamine are the lower N-alkanoyl glucosamines, e.g. N-acetyl glucosamine; phosphorylated glucosamines, e.g. N-acetyl glucosamine - 6 - phosphate or glucosamine - 6 -phosphate; and salts of glucosamine with pharmaceutically-acceptable acids, e.g. hydrochloric, phosphoric, citric, gluconic, acetic or malic acid. Additional therapeutic agents specified are sources of high energy phosphorus, e.g. phosphoenolpyrivic acid and adenosine phosphates such as the mono and dephorphates; tetracycline, oxytetracycline, ascorbic acid and tyrosine. The compositions may be administered locally, orally in the form of suspensions, inaqueous glycols or sugar solutions, tablets or capsules and in particular parenterally in the form of an intravenous injection employing isotonic saline solution as carrier. Specification 819,122 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 856,493.
